What is a reasonable time to wait for contact after a purchase?

I put a winning E-bay bid on a Seagull Dual Ace kit that was listed as being located less than 10 miles from me. I paid on the day the auction finished using Paypal, and messaged the seller asking when would be convenient to collect the kit and included my phone number to make life easy. Two days later there had been no reply and no phone call so I sent another message repeating my phone number. Repeat after another two days, now it's 7 days after the auction finished and still no contact.

Am I being unreasonable expecting a response within a day or two? Am I being a drama queen who needs to learn patience if I initiate a request for my money back? Maybe I'm just out of phase with the norms of the day when I try to repond straight away when selling items and consider it bad 'form' to do otherwise.

You are right to be concerned, you would expect the seller to have got back very quickly, after all they stated the bid closing time/date.

Just recently I bought a receiver from e-bay using the make an offer, the seller came back within 30 mins with a counter offer and we'd done the deal in a couple of hours and he'd got it in the post that day.

Frank, that's been my experience to date. I'd have thought that at this time of year he'd want such a large item out of the way, I know my house is currently so full of bags of christmas presents waiting for delivery that the cat can hardly find a flat space to doss down on.

At this rate I might end up spending Christmas conversing with the family instead of assembling another ARTFsurprise

Peter, it seems that neither will get involved until the 31st so the best I can do is to request a return for now. Apparently everything is based on items being posted and there's no easy route to raise an issue for failure to supply collection details.

When it works E-bay is great, but when it doesn't it's worse than Hobbyking.

Bob

That vendor would be very disappointed to be in this position

It is a small sale, where he has operated to a high standard since 2002, he is about as good as it gets on eBay.

No help to you, but something is Wrong

Get a 1st class letter off to him and seek out a telephone number

Your money is safe, just hold out for 14 days, if you want the model

Then your money, at any time, is yours to get back, no loss

Hi, Bob.

I don't often sell on the bay but from looking at that vendor I'd definitely say he isn't trying to burn you.

People are different and although I myself would always respond to a question/request, some don't for whatever reason.. As it happens, I have just sold some plastic kits on there and posted them off (I get proof of posting).... Just yesterday I got a message from a buyer who's item was paid for and posted off next day, less than a week ago, second class as I state on my listing.....A very short, bad tempered message, written in caps, demanding to know why he'd not received his item yet...... I have 100% positive feedback for both buying and selling and a lot mention fast delivery.

I still sent him a message straight back and I will check with the post office tomorrow but I just think it's a Christmas delay although my buyer is obviously annoyed.

Denis, if his address was visible then I'd have just jumped in the car and driven up the Kingsbury Road to knock on his door but only my own delivery address appears anywhere.

Paul, you're right, it could just be Christmas but it only takes a minute to send a message,

Richard, I try not to do bad tempered messages as I don't know his circumstances, but as a regular e-bay user I'm surprised that he should totally neglect his auction for a full week. Apart from the e-bay messages he must have had an email from Paypal telling him that he has received a payment.

A simple 'sorry, not at home for a week' message shouldn't be beyond anyone.

Why pay with PayPal if your collecting? Paying on collection prevents this issue and helps focus the seller as he doesn't get his money till collect, also saves him a couple of quid.

Because it saved me going to a cashpoint during the Christmas hysteria around shopping centres and because it's the default on e-bay. Most sellers don't need their minds focusing in my experience, most are just ordinary decent people happy to do the deal and clear the item from their living room asap.

With the feedback records I would give benefit if doubt for a short while longer.

Any personal emergency might have happened. They're human give them a break. If I had a family emergency the last thing I'd be thinking about is putting the out of office notification on.

It's a Dual Ace Denis.

Apologies to mislead you, my 1st foray into your item led me to the great guy selling the P40

Then further below, appears the Dual Ace, seller 2005 registered.

I still think there is a reliable seller at the end of this, but you will be reimbursed as you know if need be.

You have waited more than long enough since the 16th.

Hold on there, folks! I've just deleted all references to the vendor from the thread - if only for the reason that already today we've seen what happens when names of innocent people are plastered across the media.

This forum is just as accessible to the wider public as it is to members, please remember that.

I hope Bob has a satisfactory resolution to the issue but throwing someone to a baying mob isn't the way to do it....wink 2

Pete, I had included a name in the hope that someone might know him and give him a nudge or let me know if he is having problems. I can understand your deleting his name in the current climate, perhaps some forum member will recognise him from the item listed and location otherwise it's back to twiddling my thumbs for another week.

Well, it's been resolved - I'm getting a full refund after chasing this through eBay's Resolution Centre.

I hope that the mods will leave the 'seller's' details here to alert other forum members. It's my opinion tht this person wanted a payday loan over Christmas without incurring interest charges.

In summary, I bought a Seagull DualAce from eBay user Flash_too - location Sutton Coldfield, Westb Midlands. He failed to reply to my messages asking to arrange a time and place for me to collect the kit. His eBay contact details are shown as

Carl Trollope, address: 1 West Midlands (?) postcode A12B34 (??) located in Sutton Coldfield (???)

My thanks go to the Resolution Centre staff

You have been warned!

It's a bit strange! The final bid was 2/3rds of buying on direct from a shop so I can't imagine the seller was that upset at the final price (IE that the reason they didn't reply is because they changed their mind). Wierd though- I certainly would have expected a response.
