Dougie Swan 1
Hi When a plan only shows one wing and states "to build opposite wing use reverse of plan", what is the best way to get the details to show through the paper Dougie
kevin b
There will be a few replies shortly I am sure, but in my opinion the best (and least messy) way is to take the plan to your nearest print shop and ask them to do you a mirror copy. Bob Cotsford
Trace it (or at least the basic outlines and structure) on drafting paper or baking paper, tape the plan to a window allowing you to trace the details on the back, wipe the plan with paraffin/wd40. Or get it reverse printed as Kevin said!
Eric Robson
On my Hawker Fury plan from Sarik it suggests Taping to a window and drawing the reverse side. Not the easiest to do but I just drew the outline and spar positions, marked the end of the ribs and joined them up on the flat. All the print shops were on lock down at the time. Robert Parker
I use a good coating of baby oil on the reverse side using a cloth, works a treat and it is good for your hands too. Regards Robert
John Wagg
The last one I did I taped it to the window and just pencil traced (no good in the dark though). The previous one was done on a large glass table with a light underneath. You don't kneed all the details just the outline, rib positions, etc.
Martin Harris - Moderator
Gently rubbing the plan with paraffin as suggested in the instructions worked very well with my Airsail Chipmunk and covered with clingfilm it stayed transparent while I built the wing. A week or two after removing the wing, the paper went back to normal and you wouldn't know it had been see through. Other times I've traced the main points on tracing, well grease proof paper from the wife's stock, and built onto it after turning it over. If you use the copy shop method, make certain there's no distortion introduced during the copying process. Bob Cotsford
If you do go the photo copy route put some register marks on your plan, perhaps crosses on the corners, and check the diagonal measurements between these marks on the copy to make sure that it's both the same size and free from distortion. Andy Stephenson
Just spray the plan with WD40 to make it transparent enough to see it from the back. The best thing about using WD40 is that when it dries out it completely disappears and leaves your plan as new. A.
