Dremel 398 drill. New brushes, knackered?

I’ve had this drill for 20 years, steady use.

Today, plugged it in, semidead, as in, it had power, throbs, but does not move.

Removed the chuck, gives it a couple of spins, and it winds up to speed, and did the job, and remains up to standard. Is this a good clue it needs new brushes, or a good clue I need a new drill.

I have no interest in nursing end of life tools

Just had a look at the price of these things Ron. Ouch. I had no idea how expensive Dremel drills are. Could build a plane.

I think I will try a new set of brushes, and have with some difficulty tracked down a EU supplier (French resident). A motor brush is un charbon in French. Thank you for the instruction book FlyinFlynn, I found the covers, and guess they were brush covers, but couldn’t figure out how ther came off.

Oh yeah, so they are (my wife bought mine for a Christmas present for me a couple of years ago, didn’t realise she loved me that much ?)
