Don Fry
I’ve had this drill for 20 years, steady use. Today, plugged it in, semidead, as in, it had power, throbs, but does not move. Removed the chuck, gives it a couple of spins, and it winds up to speed, and did the job, and remains up to standard. Is this a good clue it needs new brushes, or a good clue I need a new drill. I have no interest in nursing end of life tools
Ron Gray
New drill Don, you know it makes sense.
FlyinFlynn
Can't hurt giving the brushes a clean after 20 years....https://www.instructionsmanuals.com/sites/default/files/2019-04/Dremel-398-en.pdf

It's certainly worth examining and, if required, replace the brushes.

Don Fry
Just had a look at the price of these things Ron. Ouch. I had no idea how expensive Dremel drills are. Could build a plane. I think I will try a new set of brushes, and have with some difficulty tracked down a EU supplier (French resident). A motor brush is un charbon in French. Thank you for the instruction book FlyinFlynn, I found the covers, and guess they were brush covers, but couldn’t figure out how ther came off. Geoff S
My Dremel is a model 395 and the brushes are about £6/pair. From a quick inspection, it's not even necessary to take it apart to replace them - 30 minutes tops, probably more like 10. Geoff
Nigel Sharp
This company does all sorts of spares just search your dremel model number. https://www.sparetoolparts.co.uk
Don Fry
Arrrrrr, but I’m in Europe, I have no desire to cross that devide. You are in the nether regions. Too expensive. Too uncertain.
