First taste of the sky

So another let down of a weekend and the countdown to what could arguabley be my last weekend flying until early mid July.

My eye will be following the forecasts for this weekend coming as the following weekend is my daughters wedding then I am on holiday for a week after that which will lose me at least one more weekend.

I'll have everything good to go ..... batteries, transmitters and models just awaiting their call of duty. If thunderbirds are go for this weekend then both my Supercub and my Beaver will be heading down to the field as I promised one of my fellow learners a couple of weeks back that I would let him see the Beaver in the flesh. He seems to be considering buying one. I have also re bound the Beaver to the NX8 after replacing the tailplane and changing out the receiver to a standard AR620 from the previous AR630 with safe etc.

Last night I spent some time in the shed and bound my Husky to My NX8 and buddiedit to the NX6. I know that strictly speaking the buddying is now not necessary due to flying solo but will continue to buddy up all my models to enable my Mentor to be on hand for maidening duties and other situations where I may feel I need assistance.

I am getting more familiar with the Spektrum software now and I'm starting to think about programming slightly beyond the basics. I think when I go on holiday, I will be accompanied by two books ..... Peter Jenkins .... Model Aircraft Precision Aerobatics, and ..... The NX6 / 8 Instruction manual. Neither are as scary these days. Peters book has taken the edge ( read as fear ) into understanding some of the flying principles ... slowly but surely just by dipping in and out of it occasionally in my own time. ..... well worth a read. Some of the more advanced elements will keep for later.

So ..... back to this weekend ..... not much more I can do at the moment bar charge my transmitters which have taken a hit whilst I was on binding duties and check the required model batteries ..... oh ....... and keep my fingers crossed.

Here we go again.

Advert

I think that Toto has done remarkably well to stay the course considering the numerous problems with equipment and training issues that he's confronted and dealt with. If I was a betting man I'd have put a few quid on him succumbing to what I've seen so many times in the past and have mentiond in these very postings - and that is 'over enthusiastic beginner's burnout'. OEBB..................I'm delighted to say that I'd have lost my money.

Mind you, it's not just beginners who lose their modelling mojo, I can think of several modelling friends who have faded away from the hobby after spending copious ammounts of cash not to mention time and effort in becoming very competant flyers after a number of years. Various reasons for the change - some due to personal matters and work, others just getting bored with it all and being attracted to cars, motorbikes, boats, fishing, golf or whatever.

My advice as before to Toto is to take thinks steadily.....one cannot buy one's way into becoming a competent modeller and flyer - I can think of several of my flying friends who actually spend quite little on the hobby and are first class flyers and builders who have developed their skills over many years. Equally, I can think of others who are the polar opposite, have spent eye watering amounts on the best of the best gear and models etc but seem to me to gain not much more from it all.

Each to their own of course.

I think that if you stop learning new things it can get boring doing the same thing all the time.  But, doing new things is difficult and can lay you open to leg pulling by your mates.

It never fails to amaze me how many pilots I've met do not want to try something new because everyone watching makes them very self conscious.  Pity really.

Still, that's life.

How desperate is this ...... I'm going to get my kicks charging 4 x 6S batteries and two transmitters tonight.

Just to give me something to do.

I know I have to programme the Otter onto the buddy box system as well so I may do that as well.

It's the light nights you know ...... you have to be doing something or its a long night.

The forecast for Saturday is a bit of a mixed batch so my efforts could very much be in vain. Never mind .... we always have hope.

Hi PDB .... that would be a struggle.

My finishing time makes things a bit tight and I can receive a call at any time. Skiving off early ain't worth it. I can do it if I get away bang on the button and if the Edinburgh Bypass is clear. I'd maybe get an hour and a bit flying provided I'm not sharing the pitch with too many .... and considering we only have one mentor between hoe ever many newbies decide to turn up. Puts a bit of pressure on the Mentor as well.

I shouldn't complain as my regime is 100% better and more reliable than what it was ...... its back to good old patience.

Batteries charged, transmitters charged ..... now ....... the wait.

I didn't bother doing the tie up on the otter for now. Thought I'd leave that for another night.

So ..... mixed vibes right now with regards to flying this weekend.

Definitely off for our usual venue down to motorbikes ....:classic_sad:.... but we may be on for our other site ...... weather depending. I also have a fewcthings I need to fit in this weekend in readiness for my daughters wedding a week on Saturday ..... pick up my Kilt which is in getting dry cleaned and repressed .... hair cut ..... finish speech ..... and whatever SWMBO dictates must be done ...... so anything can happen .... and if push comes to shove ..... even if the weather gods play fair ..... I may still have to miss out and call off if other things are more important and need to take priority due to scheduling. ...... nail-biting stuff this is you know.

Anyway .... for know .... one thing I do know is that I will be checking out the contents of the latest big brown box that arrived from Motion RC today ....... every cloud has a silver lining.

May see you from the shed later.

I love to see a big brown box arrive at the door Toto.  We all need something to look forward to in life and you will enjoy exploring the contents of this new purchase.  Good luck with that.  Also good luck with your forthcoming daughters wedding . That will be a great day out for the family and of course the biggest day in your daughters life so far.  I wish her and her new husband to be every happiness in their life together.   You will look splendid in the kilt Toto and maybe if you get your hands on a Claymore, then you could sign up for Bonnie Prince Charlie's army and be the next Rob Roy Macgregor .  All joking aside, I hope the day is great for everyone of you and I'm sure if you have a wee speech to make you will do your daughter proud.  Long live the memories of that  special day to come . Yes it will be nail biting but it will be exciting also.  On a very different note, I'm not long home from the aerodrome where I had two flights with the Avistar.   The flights went well but I've done better landings.   Aidan was there to film it with the video camera and the night was dead calm with a heavenly red sky.  I will view it tomorrow and see what it looks like.   Hope you get out flying soon Toto and back to the solo flights.   Regards Aidan    P.S.  The Avistar at the field tonight.

Looks like a beautiful night for flying.

The avistar looks the part. I'll look forward to the video when it's ready. I'm hoping I get the chance to fly this weekend as it will be my last chance for a couple of weeks.

Looking forward to the wedding and still have the speech to finish off yet. I might manage to get a photo or two of me in my kilt you never know.

Cheers

Nothing set in concrete for flying this weekend as yet.

Hoping for Sunday as I have committed to some pre wedding duties for Saturday now. Couldn't really hold off any longer ..... had to take the plunge.

I have a date with my daughter on Saturday night in an Argentinian steak house ...... Hmmmm ..... red wine .....Hmmmm.

A sort of father daughter advisory thing. ..... :classic_laugh:

If she is wise ....... she will ignore everything I say ..... :classic_laugh:..... and probably will .... why change now.

Anyway, fingers crossed for Sunday otherwise all the gear will be stood down from Defcon 5 ..... to Defcon 1 for the next couple of weeks.

Hope you all have better prospects than me.

Cheers

A fantastic Video Aidan. I'd be checking the undercarriage after that landing though .... :classic_laugh:

Nice to watch as always .... lovely long confidently flown straights with some sedately flown banking curves and the odd loop thrown in for good measure. The engine sounds sweet as well ..... what's not to like about that. Well done.

You need to revise your thinking on American states of military readiness: DEFCON 5 is normal peacetime alertness and DEFCON 1 means the world is on the brink of nuclear war.

There was me thinking that Devcon 5 was just five-minute epoxy.....

All the chores are done. I was up at the first crack of a sparrows farm..... showered, shaved .... picked up my kilt from dry cleaning .... haircut ..... been to pharmacy ..... been to the cashline  machine for some dosh and everything is also ready for my hot date with my daughter tonight.... steakhouse ... Hmmmm

I now have the afternoon to kill. I'm thinking about the shed to bind my Twin Otter to my transmitters. Currently only bound to my NX8 and not buddied to my NX6. I need something to do for the next 4 or 5 hours.

OK.... I'm off for now. Hope you are having a more interesting day than me.

Cheers

4 or 5 hours to buddy a model?  I hope 90% of that time is wondering what else needs doing on the models you have.........................or putting them in potential order of assembly...... or even just cataloguing them !  🙂🙂🙂

Hi Grumpy ..... probably a bit of the above ... but putting them in order of assembly is a bit of a no no as the shed won't take many more built models at the moment.

I am either waiting for a spontaneous crash of one of the existing ( which I'd prefer not ) or waiting to get the new shed on the go which at the earliest will be two or three months away I think as that is going to cost serious cash.

The  new shed is working its way up the priority list. I'm starting to look out for a joiner with a workshop who can prefabricated off site to a good specification. Strong and secure being the buzz words and quality as well.

It'll happen.

So .....we're on ...... Thunderbirds are go.

It's a mid day start and the weather as I type is looking good. Don't know about wind as yet but the sun is out in force.

Just up as I had a bottle of red last night with my steak ..... the food was amazing. That's twice I have used this place and 2 scores of 100% food, drink and service all good. A little pricey but I don't mind paying the price if I have enjoyed it.

Anyway ... back on post ..... The Supercub and the Beaver are both going down to the field today so there is a fair bit to pack. I'll get moving with that shortly.

I may try and get a bit of video on my pad today if I remember to take it and if there is someone there happy to operate it.

Hope everyone has a great day.
