  1. as possible, and very well fixed sorry about the glitch ernie
  2. Hi Ian, This is not unusual, indeed, its a very common problem, especially if you have a model with a short nose moment (the distance from the front of the wing to the very front of the model) So what to do? Its pretty well impossible to check during the build, but sometimes there is a note about the problem on drawings, instructions etc. Build the tail from light materials. Sometimes kits dont select the best wood for each component, go easy on the glue (cyano is good), and dont overdo tailwheels, connections etc. Remember that a small amount of weight at the tail can need a lot at the nose to counterbalance it. At the pointy bit, move the heaviest bits, batteries etc, as far forward as possible, and if you do need to add some church roof to make things balance correctly, make sure that its as far forward
  3. Dogs, That's big girls blouse stuff. We've got wild boars here. Try getting your foamie back from half a ton of prime pork chops. ernie
  4. Hi David, how about Jonathon Livingston Mouette Your french amis should love the romanticism ernie
  5. Go away Chris....I've already got far too many projects cluttering up my meager workshop. I certainly dont need to be inspired to even consider a gorgeous scale glider ernie
  6. I've got a wee book called 'the observers book of aircraft' its even got an avro anson in it ernie
  7. Hi Chris, In theory, the best wing has infinite length, and goes on forever. Of course even the most ingenious modeller finds it difficult to achieve this, so wings have tips. The wing tips are seldom as wide as the rest of the wing, indeed they are sometimes very narrow. Have a look at the DH comet. As our aircraft flies slower, the wing becomes less efficient, and eventually will stall, ie stop flying. But it's the narrow inefficient tip that stalls before the wide bit , so the tip drops, often quickly, and wow, it can catch the unwary out, often low down when you turn slowly to land. Ground loops are much simpler, You have just landed, and for some reason, Perhaps a sticky wheel, a stone on the field, or a bit of wind, the model turns around on the ground, sometimes most violently, and spoils your perfect landing ernie
  8. This really is a minefield. Balsa can vary so much. Some shops will grade balsa for you as hard, medium or soft. SLEC comes to mind. Common sense will serve you well. For example, structural members such as wing spars should be hard, whereas pieces that don't do so much can be medium. Soft can be really soft, but is useful for non structural bits of block that need a lot of carving and sanding, such as cowlings. ernie
  9. All you grumblers are just a wee bit out of order, even a great big enormous bit RCM&E is a pretty wonderful magazine, and lets face it, most businesses are having an unprecedented hard time right now. Over the years, I've found that most businesses related to our hobby are pretty straight, and do their very best, most share our enthusiasm, and understand our problems very well. It's when the bead counters move in that the skulduggery starts. Cut them a bit of slack, or guess what No mag, no forum, no place to grumble ernie
  10. Cheap anglepoise lights from IKEA are just great. I've got about five of them at strategic points.....over all the main tools. I can move the light as far or close as I want, and change shadows etc. Also I can put some of them off, and fully concentrate on just one job ernie

  14. Bert, that's incredibly kind of you, but not yet. I'll have a go myself. I've found a nice wee bit of steel, and some piano wire, all around the correct thickness. As ever the first big problem is where did I put the silver solder, and is that white powder flux or cocaine Trevor, that looks perfectly possible, It shall be plan B ernie
  15. good morning guys, and thanks a zillion for your help and interest Keith, thats exactly what I need, alas, I never get anywhere with Flair, perhaps I'll try yet again. Yes Denis, thats what I need, Its for the Fury that I'm building with Danny Fenton. I'm way behind, but still plugging away Thats the sort of thing John, I've spent a lot of time, so I want something substantial, and yes Peter Miller and Stuphedd, its going to be a home made silver soldered joint ernie
  16. I've searched the web, both high and low for the wire with a horn soldered onto it, that is used to join elevator halves together I do feel a bit of a wimp for not making one, but it is such a critical wee component, that I don't want to chance bin bagging my latest jewel due to my dodgy silver soldering skills where can I find one? ernie
  17. Hi All Many architects have now gone digital. So there must be hundreds of old drawing boards (or even more) Lying around. They are microscopically flat, and usually perfect for pinning onto. Mine is around a meter by a meter and a half ernie
  18. Hi All, Of course its annoying not to get our regular issues of RCM&E, but things are difficult, Give them a bit of slack. What we certainly dont need are USA style legal threats. Hey my plane crashed.....Sue Hobbyking. Hey my engine stopped.......Sue OS ernie
  19. Hi All, We have a very similar grant or 'bourse' here in france. The French government are of course worried about the effects of the virus on our very top sports. There are very many model flying clubs around here, usually with great wee sites, so it has quickly become a pretty big political issue. The system for obtaining the grant is unusually simple, You need to turn up at the 'mairie' or town hall with a model plane. Plastic ones are not acceptable, because an imposter could easily just buy one in the local branch of lidl. There is the usual form filling, and a short interview with the mayor, who subjects the model to a close and rigorous examination so as to ensure that it really is hand made. When these formalities are complete (about an hour) a cheque for €1000 is issued. My own club, LES CIGOGNES d' AQUITAINE only really has 3 members, and the other two are storks, that pop in to see me from time to time for some flying tips. As I write, I'm really at a loss of how to spend the grant, perhaps someone has a wonderful french style idea ernie
  20. would a space walker not have done just as well ernie
  21. Ive just noticed that the proportions are a wee but out (too fat) I can fix that E
  22. Hi all, and especially Phil I hope this is of some use. I've mixed the two images, the painting, and the Photograph. It's about A3 size, and can be printed on paper or canvas. I can send a copy of the file, if you want to sort of replace the lost one ernie
