  1. If it's crimped at the esc, it's breaking, and making, a connection every flight. If it's crimped at the battery, it's breaking, and making, a connection for each flight AND for each charge/discharge/storage. I don't do that with my servo connectors............. Similarly, when I worked on server farm, we didn't disturb any hardware on a regular basis. Each to their own I guess.
  2. Don't crimp, solder. A crimped joint is far more likely to fail.....
  3. Totally reiterate the above - there are two Taranis users in our club, one ex-Taranis user (me), 2 FlySky users, one Radiomaster user (me). Nobody has ever had a radio related issue that was not their fault. If they were unreliable, they would not sell and the internet would be awash with tales of woe - it isn't. I suspect your acquaintance believes that if you can't buy any item from him, it's rubbish! Personally, I'd do some internet research......... and find another instructor as you're quite an income stream for him. Most clubs have instructors that don't charge.
  4. Fimd 'base' software on rc-thoughts Download Extract using any free zip/unzip programme Run setup.exe from the folder you ectracted the software to. You will now have an old version of Phoenix that shouldd run (you can't use it yet - you need that dongle). 1. Locate the 'next' version on rc-thoughts 2. Download 3. Extract 4. Start Phoenix 5. Select 'Update' 6. Select the pkg file you just extracted. Repeat 1. to 6. for the remaining versions. You'll end up with v6. While waiting for your dongle, you can download sites and models and install them. The instructions above can be followed for eacb model but it's tedious... the instructions on rcgroups is quicker!
  5. You can install from ghe disk you have, and then update to V6 from the software on rc- thoughts. All the software is there, plus instructiobs - it's very straightforward. The dongke plugs into a usb port on your pc and is a security check - no dongle=sim won't run. You then run a cable from your tx to the dongle - this needs to plug into thd din-the socket on the tx. When buying the dongle, make sure you get one with a plug that fits your tx. You could also search for Phoenix on rcgroups - there is a relatively active group, with hundreds of additional mdels and sites to download - and good instructions!
  6. @Beth Ashby Moderatordid your original post get truncated? Deliberately or a restriction of the software....?
  7. My tank is a little higher than optimal, but I didn't really want to hack around with a new airframe for under 1/4"... Engine is an SC90. Glow plug on the OBG glows the same colour (by eye) as when attached to a glow stick, using a current of 1.4V when it's on high; on low, it's MUCH less bright, with a voltage of 0.8V It uses a separate 2S Lipo to the unit.
  8. I know not all will agree, but an onboard glow has transformed my inverted 90FS. It's ultra reliable and you can almost count the idling revs by eye! It uses a separate LiPo for power and is controlled by my transmitter.... Switch up = glow off (no power) Switch central = low glow power - maintenance mode Switch down = high glow - starting mode After 30 seconds on high glow, it automatically switches to low glow Above 25% throttle, glow switches off Engine kill reduces throttle and turns glow off.
  9. Yeah, lovely on Yorks East Coast as well - few more fuss-free and enjoyable flights on the Valiant, now I have reinstated the mixes that I managed to lose..... with a 90 FS it really is a perfect match. Ruckus continues to challenge me - back to basics with throttle geometry and pressure testing tank I think. IC continues to perplex and delight me in equal measures; 2 leccy models came to the field in case of issues, but didn't get any air time. Had some company with 'old Kev' getting more and more used to his beautiful H9 Mustang. And chucking his World Models Supper Chippie around like a shocky! A good day.
  10. Possibly worth including the FAI classes? Plus fun fly... Greaser - a landing on main wheels Four stroke - an internal combustion engine where the fuel is ignited every other revolution of the crankshaft Two stroke - an internal combustion engine where the fuel us ignited every revolution of the crankshaft CAA - Civil Aviation Authority. Organisation for legislating all airspace usage (probably a better definition available!) Article 16 - exemption from certain CAA regulations for model flyers Rich - fuel:air mixture on an internal combustion engine contains too much fuel Lean - fuel:air mixture on an internal combustion engine contains too little fuel
  11. DLG - discus launched glider Nitro is also a slang term for a glow engine Gasser - slang term for a petrol engine Crunchy - slang term for a wooden aeroplane Mouldy - slang term for a moulded aeroplane, made of fibreglass and similar materiels
  12. OpenTX, EdgeTX operating systems installen on anumber of different transmitters, which removes any programming constraints MPM - multi protocol module. Transmitter hardware that allows a transmitter to communicate with receivers using different communication protocols
  13. Cheers, I'll remember that. They're significantly cheaper than the OS F plugs I just treated some of my engines to!
  14. Yeah, I've taken to storing my EDF lipos in the house; or on top of the computer which always emits heat..... my poor little Hawk was only getting about 30secs of power a few weeks ago.
  15. Are they OK for SC, and Thunder Tiger four stroke engines? The Weston web site says....
  16. Gatland's back! Sadly the same players made the same basic mistakes...... 🙁
  17. Surely operating lights is just like operating, for example, a retract - one position is 'off', another is 'on'. No need for any additional electronics.......
  18. Glorious day here today - field was heaving; 4 of us . Mixed day though..... Don't know how, but I have managed to screw up the transmitter setup on my Valiant so the on-board glow never switches on..... Engine playing up in Ruckus - changed the needle o-ring which helped but low needle seems miles out..... Double Trouble flew nicely Ian's Fokker DVIII maiden didn't go to plan at all - large bucket of epoxy required! But he managed a few flights with his children on the Junior 60 'New Kev' zoomed around with his Habu and SLEC Funfly 'Old Kev' threw his little Phoenix Spit around and had a few nice flights on his very impressive H9 Mustang. Good day out overall.
  19. I went to a rugby mad school and played for a few years. Then suddenly everyone was much taller and heavier than me; as I was scrum half, I was a prized target so gave up! We were allowed to tackle above the waist - the only serious tackle issues I remember were the result of tackling low - someone's knees, or boots, when running, can do a lot of damage.... I can guarantee Delilah will continue to be sung very loudly 🙂
