Replacing Sullivan Snakes
Shaun Walsh replied to Dale Bradly's topic in Model Engineering and Accessories
Coefficient of of thermal expansion 150ppm/C for polyethylene x1000 for 1 M length x20C for temperature difference gives 3mm, have I misplaced decimal point somewhere? Good point about other polymers being used, any idea what they might be? I chose HDPE as a worst probable case. -
Replacing Sullivan Snakes
Shaun Walsh replied to Dale Bradly's topic in Model Engineering and Accessories
At first I thought that the expansion of plastic snake inners wouldn't make any difference to model trim, then I looked up the coefficient of thermal expansion of polyethylene and calculated that a 1 metre length of snake would change length by 3mm for a 20C temperature change which would probably mess up elevator trim quite a bit. It's amazing what you learn! -
I have used bathroom silicone sealant to glue servos into an e-flite Radian and it seems to work OK but I'm not sure I would rely on it for any joints which might be heavily stressed in flight. Next step up would probably be something like "No More Nails" but i'm not sure about its compatibility with foam.

I would guess that the scammers persuaded him to download a program like Windows Teamviewer which allows someone else to have remote access to your computer.

One of our club members is sometimes given the remnants of crashed models and he makes a good job of resurrecting them in one form or another. He has a Wot4 foam-e with a scratch built fuselage and on the wing is a list of donors and the parts they donated.

Trying to buy a Durafly Tundra
Shaun Walsh replied to 911hillclimber's topic in General Electric Flight Chat
Don't be tempted to skimp on the cost of the charger. A good one will help you keep your batteries in good condition and help diagnose problems. -

Is this the charger? Imax B3 pro With such a low output current it's going to take a couple of hours to charge a 2200 mAh battery. The fact that your second battery dropped by only 22% after 4 minutes would indicate that first battery is probably faulty. It might be worth getting someone else who has a more sophisticated charger to take a look at it. Check the internal resistance of each cell, should be 10 mOhms or less and each cell should have the same value, give or take a bit. If the battery if fully charged, use the charger to discharge it storage voltage, note the voltage on completion and the mAh taken out of the battery by the charger. Compare the voltage from the charger with the data in the table "State of charge vs Lipoly Pack Voltage" using the link below. Voltage vs Lipo capacity So if the Voltage is 11.51V it indicates that 50% of the capacity is left, therefore a 2200 mAh pack should have 1100 mAh left and so the charger has removed 1100 mAH. If the data from the charger is very different from the data in the table you have a faulty battery. If you can find someone with a watt meter you can monitor the battery performance and voltage sag under operating conditions (well, almost, in that the plane is still on the ground). Compare good and "bad" batteries. With sufficient data you should be able to ask for a replacement if you have not had the battery very long. -

Spectrum DXS, Futaba T6L don't have the full suite of programmability. -
2.4 GHZ Set Up complete package
Shaun Walsh replied to GARY BLANDFORD-HULL's topic in General Radio Discussion
If you are investing in a new system you will find that the more expensive computer based systems are far more versatile than the cheaper basic systems. Model memories, the ability to reverse servos, adjust rates and exponential and mixing channels are really useful and save a lot of time and heartache. -
Turnigy PLUSH ESCs updated (twice)
Shaun Walsh replied to Gary Manuel's topic in ESCs (Speed Controllers)
It has most but not all of the features but it saved me having to buy another card as I already had one available. -

Just used a 4-Max programming card on a Plush 30 amp Esc and it worked fine. -
Seen Flying On My Walk Today
Shaun Walsh replied to Adrian Smith 1's topic in All Things Model Flying
Had one of these fly over my house at low level a few months ago, very noisy, great fun. My daughter flew in one when she was in Air Cadets, the pilot threw it around all over the place to see who had the strongest stomach?. She also flew in a Merlin, when they came in to land a cyclist on the road next to the landing site was blown off his bike, not sure he was amused. -
I have one as well, much quicker than discharging through the charger and safer than using a headlight bulb/timer.

I have a Circle Dancer which flies well in light winds but can anyone recommend something for higher wind speeds. I have a second hand High Sierra which would probably be OK if it responded to rudder movements (currently fitting a much larger rudder) but is there anything currently available around 2 metres span with a similar mass capable of flying off a bungee and penetrating in higher winds. I have a Graupner Cumulus which would probably be good but cannot bring myself to risk it, I have converted it to electric motor pylon power for flying on calm days. Any suggestions?

Wot4 foam-e motor / ESC for my 2.9m introduction glider?
Shaun Walsh replied to Tim Donald's topic in Power System Selection
Just looked at the instructions for the Introduction, the recommended motor looks a pretty tight fit, don't think anything wider will fit. Something like this might be suitable. 4-Max motor -
What is the ESC?BEC voltage? Some have adjustable voltages. If not adjustable they normally output 5V which would mean that the speed and torque of the servo will be reduced. If it is adjustable than make sure that the receiver can handle the higher voltage and adjust it to 6 or 7V to take advantage of the higher speed and torque.

ESC- Motor Connection Problem
Shaun Walsh replied to Tosh McCaber's topic in All Things Model Flying
That's correct, port 1 is for separate receiver battery, you need to plug the esc lead into port 2. Caught me out the first time I set my ar620 up ?♂️ -

Simple lipo battery checker?
Shaun Walsh replied to 911hillclimber's topic in Batteries and Chargers
If there is room in the fuselage, fit one of these to the balance lead of the battery. Battery voltage alarm Set the alarm to 3.75 V and it will go off when there is approx 25% left in the battery Lipo capacity vs voltage -

You can charge from a car battery if your charger will accept 12 volt input. You may have to make up a lead with suitable connectors and remember that a car auxiliary socket can normally supply a max of 120 Watts. Also if anything goes wrong there's a lot of flammable materials inside a car. Best option is multiple batteries. The charger you have sounds pretty simple, ideally you want one that displays voltage and the ampere hours of charge that has gone into the battery. It should also be capable of balance charging, discharging to storage voltage and if it can display the internal resistance of the battery cells you can monitor battery condition too. A cheap battery checker will enable you to monitor how much charge is left in the battery after your flight. -
Volantex Ranger 1600 under powered
Shaun Walsh replied to Brian Dorricott 1's topic in All Things Model Flying
Four options Fit an 8x6 2 blade prop Fit a 3 blade prop, 8x4 or 8x6 Fit a 2212 1800Kv motor with an 8x4 prop. Use a 4s battery. You will need an ammeter to make sure you don't exceed the ESC rating. A set of luggage scales is useful too, attach to the tail and measure the available thrust.
