Doug Ireland
Gents, a question any car mechanics out there. I have a gallon of old two-stroke mix (20:1) that I need to dispose of. My question is will it damage the engine of my car (X-Type Jag) if pour it into the tank?
Klippy
If it was made with leaded petrol, then don't do it! If not, then if you put it into a nearly full tank, then it shouldn't make too much difference. Don't take just my word for it though. I think Ultimate is pretty good with these things. Doug Ireland
Thanks Tony, hopefully Eric or Ulti will see this.
Myron Beaumont
Doug No problem. Many moons ago ,I ran out of petrol at sea ,but had a mix in a tin for my seagull outboard motor So i put it in the tank for the Volvo inboard/outboard main motor . Well you would wouldn't you with the Cornish rocks ahead ! Absolutely no problems.5 star petrol if i remember 'cos I was running an E-type at the time (wish I still had but that's another story ) Myron Ah! Pure nostalgia ! Ultymate
Won't hurt Doug, obviously the more petrol you dilute it with the better

Doug Ireland
Thanks for the reassurance guys, I've got maybe 3/4 of a tank in the car already so I'll just top it off with the two-stroke stuff. cheers,
Frank Skilbeck
Better still use it as an excuse to buy a petrol engine and model to go with it.............

Frank, I already have a couple of petrol engined models. The fuel in question is over a year old and in need of replacing.

Martin Harris - Moderator
Petrol definitely goes off (usually within a couple of years) but I'd also be concerned about poisoning the cat - the tin box full of expensive platinum, not the furry thing on the sofa - assuming it has one... Martin Harris - Moderator
I thought as much but with all the talk of E-types, I did wonder if you meant it was a Mark X - which wouldn't suffer in the least. For info - from a cat manufacturer's website: Plugged Or Contaminated. Plugged or contaminated catalytic converters are caused by using the wrong sort of fuel in your car. Using leaded or lead replacement fuel will plug up the monolith and cause it to stop working. A similar thing will happen if fuel additives are used that are not suitable for use with a catalytic converter. Oil FouledThis is caused by oil getting into the exhaust system and contaminating the catalytic converter. The most likely cause is a leaking gasket. Using old 2 stroke fuel might cause either of these unhealthy conditions although I accept it would be well diluted. Personally, I wouldn't risk it for the sake of a fiver! Myron Beaumont
Simon Your comment about " Does petrol go off ?" reminded me of something that an old mining /china clay worker friend of mine down Cornwall once said when selling his house which had a coal shed .Full of coal ! he said, but havn't used any for a couple of years --It's probably gone off by now . True story Myron

Reminds me (sorry, bit off topic) of when I checked some bottled water that claimed it contained water that had been filtered through rocks for several million years - mine was within a few months of its use by date - lucky or what?!?!?Edited By Martin Harris on 08/12/2010 11:16:
Myron Beaumont
PS Why is it that when I try to insert smileys ,all I get is a little circle with a red cross in it & I have to start all over again . I do have a new hard drive in my lap top but can't get to grips with it .Can't even get any mail .Sorry ---Wrong thread !
Myron Beaumont
Martin After millions of years the proper water has finally been contaminated by man made plastic bottles giving it a miniscule life span (comparatiively speaking that is)
