PSSA EVENT CANCELLATION

WESTBURY WHITE HORSE PSSA EVENT 17/18th SEPTEMBER 2022

 

Following the passing of HRH Queen Elizabeth II and with a state funeral now aligned for Monday 19th September, we have taken the balanced decision to CANCEL our planned flying event at The White Horse near Westbury - 17/18th September as a mark of respect with the nation in mourning.

Hi all,

Having completed a little work with local councils and club commitees the PSSA is happy to announce its plans for flying events between April and October 2023.

Please note that at The Great Orme event in May we will be marking the 80th Anniversary of the RAF 617 Sqn 'Dambusters' raid by bringing together as many PSS Lancasters as we can muster - if you have a PSS Lancaster in your flying arsenal and can prepare it for our event please do join us! - Around the usual Fly for Fun set up there will be dedicated Lancaster flying slots and there will be a static area set up for all the models set to be viewed up close when not in action!   See you there 20th/21st May!

The May event with possibly a squadron of Lancasters in the air would be a superb sight to see and a small tribute to the men who flew with 617 squadron.Hope someone has a good video camera to capture the event and the weather looks kindly on the spectacle!Hopefully will be there with three Lancs.

I will be bringing my old Lanc to the event along with a couple of other models and will be looking for a pilot willing to fly them.Unfortunately due to my partial sight loss, I cannot safely fly them myself.Any takers?

Some important info regarding this weekends PSSA Fly in at Llandudno - wind direction is dictating we use the NE slope above the pier meaning a revised parking location for all visitors.  More below;

Just a quick round up from our PSSA Dambusters 80th Anniversary meet held last weekend at The Great Orme. 

 

Sadly the high pressure forecast led to light North Easterly winds and we spent two days up above the pier in glorious conditions but for the winds needed to fly our heavier PSS models, including the Lancasters... that said we did fly Chris Collis's Lanc on Saturday afternoon when the wind speed peaked I guess 10-12 mph max, Chris' 102" span Lanc was lightly loaded and handled these conditions superbly for a 25 minute tribute flight.

 

 

A big thanks to all who travelled and took part over both days, we saw 8 different Lancasters present ranging in scale from large to small, including the soon to be released RCM&E pull-out plan from Martin Gay and Gordon Studley.  Dambusters themed prizes were awarded to Andy Johnson, Harry Twist and Al Gorham, who took the model of the event award with his superb 617 Sqn Lanc equipped with both Upkeep and Tallboy weapons, and everyone left with a memento can of real ale speciallly brewed for the PSSA again with a Dambusters theme.

 

 

Of course we flew all weekend with the lighter loaded PSS models and sports/thermal/vintage stuff, making the most of the conditions as we always do.

If you like really big scale gliders (1:1) then there are 3 National level glider competitions (15m, Open, Standard classes) commencing today at Lasham.

The Great Orme event in May will include an 80th Anniversary D-Day commemoration theme with a collection of models from the period all adorned with the Allied invasion stripes.  We will set up a static display area for all these models to be viewed together and we'll run a couple of dedication D-Day flying slots if the weather allows each day.  If you have a PSS model from the era with the Invasion Stripes fitted do please bring it to this event to help us commemorate the 80th Anniversary of this milestone event.

Not our first event of the year, but our second event in May 2024, and a special 'focus' around the D-Day 80th Anniversary.   The following text (and superb event logo designed by our very own Bob Jennings) will be included in RCM&E 'Switch On' shortly.

 

PSSA D-Day 80^th Anniversary Event

As part of the Great Orme ‘Fly for Fun’ meeting on 18^th/19^th May 2024 the Power Scale Soaring Association are planning to commemorate the 80^th Anniversary of the D-Day Landing operation by bringing together as many PSS models adorned with the black and white D-Day stripe markings as they can muster.  There’s no competitive element to the event, there will be a dedicated static area enabling all the allied invasion aircraft to be viewed up close together with group photos and dedicated ‘D-Day’ flying slots being run both days should the conditions allow.

The PSSA are keen to maximise the number of models taking part - If you have a PSS model of an aircraft associated with the D-Day theatre and marked up with the famous black and white stripes then please do come and join us at The Great Orme, it should be quite a spectacle!

Meet at the 'Tank Track' car park off Marine Drive for pilots brief 10am each day.  Proof of BMFA (or equivalent) Insurance and Pilot Competency certificate required.  All models to be fitted with compliant CAA OpID number.
