Eamonn Fahey
Nice piece of work John, that's the part that I'm dreading. I'm hoping Danny's new way of doing planking works for me.
john stones 1 - Moderator
Thanks fellas Nothing to dread Eamonn, you'll enjoy it. Keep it pinned down and just plod on. John
Nev
Looking good John, you'll have it finished in no time at this rate. The planking looked pretty straight forward, from this distance anyway. I'm still faffing about with the tail plain.
john stones 1 - Moderator
It is Nev, just needs patience, starting my tail plane now have been cutting the ribs out...I don't want to do that again John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Tailplane all marked up for my ribs, plan carefully placed under plastic sheet then core laid on top Why can't see it. 1/4 leading and trailing edge added...it's deeper than plan states because I shall butt sheeting up to it rather than over it, will give the same result and I find it's easier. I don't plan on straying from the plans but didn't feel confident I would build this straight without altering it. John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Ribs added then leave it to dry a bit, then add the two pieces of block in centre. John

john stones 1 - Moderator
Well my pictures are rubbish , so will take my camera to meeting tonight and get some advice Tailplane is o.k. though, sheeted one side is still true, turn over and repeat. Close up of planking, not too bad eh John

Terry Walters
Well John - things are getting on aren't they! If the planking pic was taken with flash I would try holding a piece of tissue of white hanky over the flash to reduce it's effect at short distances. john stones 1 - Moderator
Thanks lads, Yes Terry the flash caused it I don't know what i'm doing with a camera. John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Again not a lot done but started the fin, used a core again, ribs are 1/16 apart from the base rib, plenty strong enough there is no flex at all. Added a 1/8 strip each side of rudder l/e to bring up to thickness and will shape when fin is done. Full of cold roll on the summer John
Nigel Day
Looking good John. I may follow your method and use a core.
john stones 1 - Moderator
Tail plane came out straight, still very light John
Danny Fenton
Nice one, well done John Cheers Danny
john stones 1 - Moderator
Lifted fin from board nice and straight, repeat on other side then laminate an 1/8 strip down leading edge, will use a slightly harder piece to make it ding proof. john stones 1 - Moderator
Started on the elevators, cutting my own parts so core is one piece, grain runs opposite on the tips so it's strong enough. Fitted my end ribs first then used tail to get hinge position, then adjust ribs to suit. Ribs cut oversize then sand to profile. john stones 1 - Moderator
Still plodding on, elevators finished, is plenty there so I can sand to match t/plane. Only top sheet and l/e strip to go on fin. I built a little different on some parts but still have a light set of flappy n waggly bits. john stones 1 - Moderator
Having a day at museum next week, I want a look underneath to see how the wing sits in fuzz and with a bit of luck they may let me view cockpit close up John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Tail end is done apart from the shrouds, I have hinges to make before I can sand it all up, have finished the top sheeting, last two pieces went on easy nice gentle curve, will slope the cockpit area later to prevent it getting damaged, it's very light I reckon you'll enjoy building it.
