Martyn Johnston
Still astonishes me that 'Anybody' believes in that stuff. In my opinion it should be illegal to have it in newspapers because there are actually people out there who are daft enough to base decisions on what the 'stars' say. kc
The fact that so many forum members have replied negatively about astrology suggests we have a more intelligent lot of people here than average! In this day and age giving away your star sign publicly is a bit dodgy because obviuosly it reveals your birthday ( within about 30 possibilities) and no intelligent person gives away anything that could possibly help identitiy thieves. if you also mention your age ( and many do here ) then your date of birth can be deduced within 30 guesses! Edited By Martyn Johnston on 24/08/2016 14:30:23 Yup it astonishes me too and I certainly don't believe in it, however I do fit the profile very well of a typical Virgo and my birthday does fall right in the middle of the star sign. Peter Miller
While reading the usual horoscopes in news papers etc is farcical as we all know I did have an interesting experience once. I paid for a proper horoscope which wanted a lot of detailed information. Interestingly the description of me was pretty accurate. There were several unusual forecasts, being left money specifically from females where just two of them then a couple of others. Some time later three out of four actually came true. I have never done it again but it was quite interesting.

Ben B
Now of course what we need as comparison for the results so far is the month-by-month birth rate. I suspect it's not constant.... Personally I believe it's all a load of superstitious cobblers. Though I'm crossing my fingers, touching wood and genuflecting whilst saying that

Martin Harris - Moderator
While I find any sort of belief in Septic Peg's predictions in the Daily Wasteofpaper pathetically naive (personal opinion) I have often wondered whether early experiences colour personalities to a certain extent. For instance, those born in spring and summer in higher latitudes experience longer and warmer days during their first months as opposed to those born later/earlier in the year who experience the gloom and chill of winter. No Michael - what Martyn says here is fine - because he makes it clear that this is his opinion - and he is of course entitled to his opinion and to express it on here (as long as his opiion is decent and legal!). What he can't do - and what would get him in hot water as you describe it - is express what is in reality his opinon as if it were a given fact. That would be a problem and is not allowed on here - whatever starsign you are. Don't know about personality, but there is a significant relationship between birth month and academic achievement, even up to the age of 16. Martin Harris - Moderator
That's supposed to be due to the age differential - up to the extreme case of those born at the end of the summer holidays and those at the beginning of the school year, of almost a year. For example, I was over 5 when I first went to school and my O levels were done, assessed and the results distributed well before my 16th birthday. Some of my classmates had started school at 4 1/2 and had their 16th birthdays soon after resuming the 5th year (year 11 in the modern parlance). That's always been my excuse! The Wright Stuff
As a scientist, I can think of a number of reasons why a correlation could be expected! Correlation is not causation, remember! Is it possible that people get into aeromodelling via birthday presents, and the time of year the birthday falls affects the suitability of a model as a present? I'm pretty sure you'd need a much bigger sample size to see anything conclusive though. In the meantime, it might be fun to see who can come up with the most convoluted (but physically possible) explanation, in a 'tenuous links' fashion! Martin Harris - Moderator
On reflection, I will enter my details - Beth, perhaps it might have been better to survey by birth month - aeromodellers tend to be a fairly down to earth bunch (if that isn't an oxymoron!)
