EarlyBird
Thanks for the compliments Peter and John. I had a good day yesterday, today I have to do even better Well that's according to my Dad Onwards and upwards. Cheers Steve
Peter Miller
Saying "You have to do better!" is the worst thing a father can say to a son, especially when the son is doing a perfect job. I assume that your father must be a gold medal winner at the Model Engineer Exhibition at the very least and probably a multiple Nats Champion. to say that! EarlyBird
Thanks once again for the compliment Peter. Nope you assumed wrong but I guess you knew that Started the second wing. The tricky bit next fitting the dark blue between the white. Which entails the trickiest bit, removing the backing from the HK dark blue covering film. Am I the only one that has difficulty with this, only dark blue as I have no problems with other colours. Cheers Steve
Peter Miller
Yes, Some Hobbyking film is a real swine to separate from the backing. I find that two pieces of strong sticky tape works best, Magic tape for example. I use do get that "do better" I will not go into that any further
EarlyBird
So to the tricky bit. First set out the sides and use masking tape to give the side lines to work to. Measure, cut and check for fit. Looks good so onto the trickiest bit. This time I used Peters two pieces of tape method and wow it worked a treat. Iron in place and trim as usual. EarlyBird
Sparing you all the blow by blow detail here is the finished bottom of the wing. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Looking at the wing bottom this morning I decided that once in the air this will obviously be the bottom, which was the original intention. Now I need to make the top obviously the top. I have looked at the completed 2016 Ballerina photos and have decided to use white, light blue and jacinth. I do like the distinctive scalloped design, which I am assured is easy to do. So I will follow suit. I am also considering incorporating some curves on the fuselage. Hmm lots of thinking to do. Of course I could make my life easy by using one colour, as has been suggested by club mates. But where is the challenge in that? Cheers Steve
Peter Miller
Scallops are dead easy. Just buy a circle cutter from any good stationery store.
Bob Cotsford
Posted by Peter Miller on 27/08/2020 11:44:26: Scallops are dead easy. Just buy a circle cutter from any good stationery store. or raid the kitchen for a few side plates, saucers and cups to cut around. I've used both crockery and circle cutters and crockery is quicker but a circle cutter can be more precise
EarlyBird
Thanks scallops it is then, now how can I make it even harder and a worthwhile challenge? Hmm... Todays production. Yes not a lot just two servo mounts and two ailerons covered. In my defence I do find these little parts fiddley. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
One more little part covered. In the background is the colour combination for the wing top. As I have no sense of colour matching, according to my ex, what do you think? Cheers Steve
Peter Miller
Looks OK to me!!. My current project should fly really well.... I have accidently bled copiously on it and they always fly better with a blood offering but it must be accidental.
EarlyBird
That's good! Another decision you have made for me Peter Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Final preparation completed on the wing top. First colour, white, marked out. Bottom of the wing tip masked off. All ready so it's cut some film off the roll and get on with it. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
White and light blue done. Jacinth tomorrow. I could fit ailerons and wing servos or start on the fuselage covering. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
Jacinth it is then! Mark up the wing and measure the dimensions. Transfer the dimensions to the Jacinth roll and cut. Then test fit. That's good enough. Next remove the backing, this time, yes I have tried to iron on the covering with the backing and it does not work (but only once). But first it's time for a second coffee. More latter...... Cheers Steve
Peter Miller
I was once given the job of refurbishing a Flair Piper Cub. The builder,a complete novice, had actually managed to cover the whole model with Solarfilm with the backing film still attached. I don't know how he did it but he did. I told Andrew Hardman about it and he said that someone else had managed to do it once before. The rest of the model was built to the same standard. EarlyBird
Peter there is nothing wrong with your sense of humour this morning You made me laugh, haven done that for a long time. How is your build coming on? Also have you learned to be careful with sharp knives? Cheers Steve
Peter Miller
My build is plodding along OK. It is a bit harder than normal as I am doing some design as I go along. I am always careful with sharp knives and engines. It doesn't stop the odd accident. I remember coming back to the house when I had a workshop out side. I had done a good job with a knife that had gone in quite well and I was dripping blood copiously. One of the dogs got really excited. "OOH!! Fresh meat.Yippee.!! I had the same thing when flying and I removed allthe skin of the top of a knuckle adjusting someones needle valve. I went backuptothe farm yard and sat in the read of my estate bandaging the finger, blood all over the ground. The farmers dog got all excited by the blood on the ground!!. I keep a first aid kit in the car specially designed for fingers chopped by propellers
EarlyBird
Hmm some times I wish I had never asked One mornings work! But then I have done a lot of laughing. Cheers Steve
EarlyBird
One afternoons work. No scallops as I could not work out how to have two colours both with scallops. But it is obvious which is the top and which is the bottom. Next glue the dowel and wing bolt ply plate on then final wing seating adjustment followed by covering the fuselage.
