jeff2wings
So a while ago when having a sort out in the workshop I pulled three sets of new foam wings out of the rafters that I bought a few years ago, and having purchased a load of balsa from Balsa Cabin at the Popham airshow 👍and have a go at a own designed model. I think the wings were for ATS Kite ? of around 63" span so would be a good size for a '70's/80's style aerobatic model, there's nothing unusual about the fuselage construction, the tailplane is built up and sheeted, solid elevators and fin/rudder, not decided yet to go for a tail dragger or tricycle u/c. Currently thinking of using this upfront HP61F
Steve Adams
Looks very nice Jeff, Has a bit of the Harry Gilkes Cat series of designs feel to it but a lot smoother in appearance with a sort of Birdie mix also.
Nigel R
Nice work, like it. Screams trike gear to me 🙂
jeff2wings
Yes, I suppose it does have a touch of the 'cats' about it and I several of the free plans from back then,I wonder how many will remember his firebrand design?anyway l've fitted the snakes, closed up underneath with 3/16 sheet, reduced the a/r of the fin/rudder and just needs a good sanding/filling session for the final finish, then it's install the undercarriage and servos and under wing faring then the hardest part of all, coming up with a colour scheme !!
Nigel R
Like this a lot. Nice one Jeff.
jeff2wings
Finally got around to doing the faring on the wing on this project, after a lot of sanding down it blends in quite well. This now means I need to decide whether to go for a all paint finish, all film finish, or a combination of both 🤔 not too mention a suitable colour scheme!!
jeff2wings
Well got to making a start with the covering using my dwindling stock of Hobbyking film, not enough orange left so will be mostly blue. 3

Nigel R
Looking good. Very shiny motor! Is it wearing an old Perry carb?
jeff2wings
It was just the first one I picked up for show, it should have this kavan on it that is currently on something else. Perry carbs are good but can clog up easily if care isn't taken to filter the fuel

Martin McIntosh
Looks just right to me, along the lines of a Ripmax Gangster which was a very good model, in fact somebody won the F3A Nats with something very similar.

Do you mean Mick Reeves Gangster?
jeff2wings
Is this the one you're thinking of Martin?
Martin McIntosh
Er yes, it was. That guy came from nowhere with a simple tail dragger and beat us all. Got his comeuppance at the Swiss W/Cs though.
jeff2wings
Keith Maundrell, still beat Terry Cooper and Mike Bone 😏 can't remember hearing much of him after that?anyway your right that I have taken styling features from that era although I think it could have done with 1 1/2-2" more in the fuselage, we will see when it's flown 🤞
Martin McIntosh
You won`t because he got sent home in disgrace from the 1975 W/Cs. Do not want a lawsuit against me but if the OP wants a little more detail, PM me.
jeff2wings
As intrigued as I am I think it's better to let sleeping dogs lie,I would be more interested to here of you experiences of flying from that decade 👍
Martin McIntosh
Hi again Jeff, not forgotten you. I would love to tell you about that era but it could go on and on. I once wrote w/c reports for the classic aeros association but they never did get published, probably because the recipient passed away. If you wish please let me know how much detail you would like and I can come up with something interesting, This could be rather long so I would have to write, save, and then attach to a mail. PM me with your mail and phone No. please. Martin.
