Pete B
This is the site Myron is referring to but it's trade only. If you select a product you then search for an online retailer with the link provided. For example, a search on 'solder' produced this result, and eventually to this retailer. Convoluted perhaps but if it's the only way to get lead solder...... Pete
Phil Brooks
Thanks Pete, all is now clear. Thanks also Myron, another useful site to add to the bookmarks list! Edited By Phil Brooks on 17/02/2013 12:39:
Chris Bott - Moderator
I just tried a quick search on eBay for 60:40 solder. There seems to be plenty available still. Personally I swear by LMP solder, its easier to use and is less likely to result in a dry joint. Searching for that though, it seems hard to find in small quantities. Johnny Kirkham
Halfords still sell solder, we were talking about it yesterday up the field and im told its the old lead type. Is this it *LINK*?? Johnny
Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Yes you can get "proper" solder from lots of places - its only industrial users in manufacturing that have to use the lead free stuff. I use C&L Finescale (a hang over from my model railway days!) - they have a big selection of solders, fluxes, acid etch etc.. BEB
malcolm woodcock 1
I get mine, only in 17g packs admittedly, from Yorkshire Deals here in Thirsk. Only £1 a 17g pack but just a bit of shoe leather from home.
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
60/40 solder available from here too...... Much better than that 'orrible unleaded stuff......
Greybeard
I use the Component Shop, the sell both types as well as other useful items.
Engine Doctor
60/40 solder is generally available at most diy or eltrical stores for home use and repairs . The new regs only apply to the manufactureres of electrical goods . maplins should sell it no problem . I bought a couple of large rolls when the new regs were in the press as they read or implied that ALL solder was affected . Now I probably have a lifetimes supply. David Tweddle
But not my Maplins, the lad said he had never seen any in all the years he had worked there. But then again my Grandson was about his age so... David

Peter Miller
Squires sell several solders including low melting point. Interestingly they only stock one lead-free solder but several lead/tin types. ask for their incredible free catalogue and watch your flexible friend go ridgid with horror as you find masses of things that you really need to add to their order. Mowerman
Maplins in Bradford told me that it was illegal to sell leaded solder retail ! Found it from Farnel mail order. Only problem smallest is 250g reel plus £20 min order for Mail.
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
Ah...Maplins......Bless!!! I think the directive to ban lead in solder was more aimed at large operations using wave solder techniques rather than a few blokes soldering in sheds.... 60/40 Solder is still widely available...my link above to CPC still works.....they are in fact part of Farnell & are offering free delivery.....go figure as they say......if you visit the CPC site you can stock up on heatshrink, cable ties etc etc....have a good look around before you hit the "Confirm Order" button ...
