KEITH BEAUMONT 1
Hi Jeff, That is interesting information. I have only ever purchased this silencer from new and at the time cannot remember it being listed for size of engine. The centres of the mounting lug was what made me buy this one. I ended up making a multi pipe, straight through , but curved unit, more for directing where the exhaust castor went ,than trying to lower the sound. I have a photo somewhere and will post it later. jeff2wings
Nice pipe work Keith hope you got ear plugs 😄 I did have another go at running the JJ but as I adjusted for max rpm the engine would choke and drown with excess fuel, basically the four small transfer ports have been cut somewhat oversize so I will be making a new liner and piston x2 to go with my own new build, but use the simpler style Webra porting rather than the HP porting, but that will have to wait for the darker evenings to arrive 😀! jeff2wings
Enya 90-4c restoration So in other news I was looking for a 90 four stroke for a current project and thought I would use my NIB Enya that I had on the shelf, nice I like Enyas........ Ah,there it is ......except when I opened the box I was confronted with an engine that had dirt encrusted oil all over it and was locked solid!😲 hardly NIB then, but l'm sure when it was in the display cabinet with my other Enyas it was immaculate........and it still is ,,this is one I took a gamble on from eBay (think I paid around £90 for it)as the seller thought it was unused but didn't know for certain as it was an estate sale and I had just forgotten I had it ! ☺ Duh . So I forgot too take a picture of it as it came out the box but here are some of it being stripped for cleaning. quick dip in the U-son cam housing back of the main case front end separated after a good blast with a heat gun umm,new bearings please...... hopefully bearings will arrive tomorrow and I will pop it back together over the weekend
J D 8 - Moderator
I am also an Enya fan, both two and four stroke's Recent purchase on the test stand, 90 No 3
jeff2wings
I have 6 four strokes 1 120,2x 90,46,41 and a open rocker 35 plus numerous 2 strokes like 4 ss40 's that are like OS fp's but better 😄
Paul De Tourtoulon
I also have a few 4 strokes, but I love my Enya's, here my .90 rebuilt after a hard life in a Futura Helicopter ( a disaster) and 25+ years in my Marutaka Spitfire, here just rebuilt a few years ago, the brass flywheel is for the C of G and gives it a nice tickover and stops it throwing props at idle. My one also looked like yours, Jeff. Ps, yes, held in with self tappers !. Edited August 3 by Paul De Tourtoulon PS
David Davis
I have only two Enyas at the moment, a 120FS and and a 50SS currently installed in the club's ARTF Boomerang trainer. I love them both! I've owned 40 and 45 Enya two strokes in the past and they have proved very reliable. Sometimes I wish I'd never got rid of them but then I've got far more engines than I will ever use even if I live to be 100! I suppose we all have!
jeff2wings
Interesting comment about throwing props at idle? Only ever had it happen at max rpm, will see what happens when I run it. Anyway bearings arrived from model fixings this morning, excellent service from tthem as always. crankshaft cleaned up ,just some very light surface pitting but not onthe bearing surface Cylinder head straight out the u-son no combustion residue at all and no sign of polishing action on the camshafts and no scuff marks on the piston =this engine has never run👍 Clean as a whistle! ready for the test stand and running in to start 🙂
Paul De Tourtoulon
My 2 saito 100's threw props after taxing out and throttling up, or on the starting table.
Engine Doctor
Hi Paul. Pre ignition is often the cause . As discussed caused by too high compression ratio, too hot glow plug or wrong fuel mix. I also often see engines having just been startedbring run at high speed with the glow connected. This can cause a ptop tht8w or engine damage as the plug being chsrged will be hotter than needed and advancing ignition further thsn required. A trained ear can hear there ignition . The Enya that I fitted a shim to can be pushed to pre ignition by weakening the mixture at WOT but gives plenty of warning and time to richen it to a good run. I believe that Enya 60 4c and a 120 4c I have waiting for attention have been " looked at " before I aquired them by some " all the gear , no idea" who threw out the head shim with the washing mix as they showed signs of prviously being worked on. Conversely a too low compression will lower an engines power output considerably. I built a small fun fly some years ago for a new in box SC 25 I had aquired. It cam fitted with a glow plug so off to the field for a maiden. Engine would idle superbly at around 1500rpm ! Max revs though were just under 7k and not enough to take off. After messing about and getting nowhere I took the plug out to check it. The hole in the plug where the coil fits was enormous compared to a OS plug . OS plug fitted and away it went. Th8s obviously had the effect of lowering tge comp ratio enough to spoil the performance. I think in the past a greater choice of plugs were available for getting some odd engines to run ok . There were many engines turned out by small concerns wh9 had previously made diesels before CNC was around and tolerances were often at best questionable. I may still have that odd plug , if i do ill post a pic compared to a OS type.
jeff2wings
Funnily enough I'm having a similar problem with a couple of TT91's but that said they do have relatively high compression at 10.1 and aggressive cam timing, both have very low run, both have gone slightly lean in flight and subsequently stopped from detonation, in fact one knocked a big end so this mornings project was..... will have a play with fuel and plugs but mot likely add a shim
jeff2wings
Last little job on the TT 91 is replacement of the damaged push rod tube Hopefully will have time to give it a run up this week

jeff2wings
Sherman - 210 AC/DC Tig however half way through the first one I run out of gas ! Luckily I was able to drop in to my ex-works and use the Miller transtig 350 ,bit out of practice so for me it's a little untidy but looks better after it's machined off !😄
Paul De Tourtoulon
Nice job, I need to make one for my Saito 150.
jeff2wings
Got too run both the Enya and TT90 today the Enya started second flip of the prop! The thunder tiger needed a spin with the electric starter, the extra shim making top end tuning a little less fraught Enyas like saitos always seem to be set up a bit rich on the lower end from the factory, smoke on! TT running strongly on its 14x8 jfx prop
