Thanks, gents, very clear and informative. I like the look of the Horus over the Taranis.

However Open Tx, companions, etc. is all Double Dutch to me, so maybe, if I ever need an 8 channel I'd better stick to something simpler!

So well recommended though...it HAS to be considered.

Can a complete computer phobe like me understand the programming? Is it worth somebody who only wants to fly a scale or sport model of smaller size smoothly and realistically going beyond a basic set?

And there's me hasn't even flown recently!

A good friend has recently gone down with a sudden and rather severe dementure. His family will soon want to sell off all his stuff and I wonder whether his last purchase, a little used Futaba 2.4 g set would be a good buy s/h. Or should I hold out for one of his many Lazer engines?

Foxfan, if you want a basic set, it does not matter what you get. If it fits your hands, it's from a trusted source, you can fly it. And no one has every truly regretted a Futaba set. Choose what you REALY want in your own time. Don't hold out for one of the Lasers. Get the lot.

I have used frsky for several years initialy via a JR tx and a module .I now have a Horus 12 with the frsky operating system .I find this very easy to use and will do everything I want . A mate has a Horus 10 witch also great and easy to use via frsky operating system . The receivers are inexpensive and the whole system is very reliable ,T9 hobby sport are very good retailers in the UK

Ho, Don, I'd love the lot, but believe me that really is a LOT! Pete has been buying engines for years. There are at least 10 in his workshop, more in his garage and his sheds and his caravans and there are over 50 model aircraft in the loft too! His wife calls them "all that bloody timber". He has a long time friend who is in the model business and I think she must be rubbing her hands. It looks like it all go to her. I've been asked not to call round any more as it would upset him not to recall who I am. That hurts. I've spent so many hours of good company with him and I would love to buy something of his vast collection, especially as I helped him build so much of it. He was always a Futaba man, has filing cabinets full of it, but all 35meg, apart from the latest set.

I just want his lifetime's work to go to good homes. His ghastly wife would just put the lot in a skip.

Ah well, I suppose all our stuff goes that way when we go.

RE programming - have a look at the Painless 360 videos here and see what you make of it

Hmm, thanks for those, Conrad. But I did find the stuff by Painless 360 a little difficult as it assumed a little previous experience of modern gear I think. I did get a bit bogged down. I think I will need to actually get some air time first with my simple set and see if I A) need a more complex radio and B) want one!

But many thanks for all the info. I think the OP started a great thread here.

You don't need to be a computerista in the slightest to use the Taranis, nor to get started do you need to worry about programming it via Companion, nor do you have to watch countless You Tube how-to videos.

I bought the basic Taranis X9D Plus transmitter (half the cost of the Horus with virtually all the same functionality) and a copy of this spiral-bound Taranis X9D Plus OpenTx user manual. I just read the intro, then followed the instructions and in a trice I'd programmed my four-servo slope-soarer, then I copied this over as the template for my Wot4 to which I added motor on the throttle-stick, etc.

Anyone who can already fly and who's previously learnt to set up and fine-tune a new model on any other brand of radio won't have any real problem. Being an open system its incredibly powerful to programme for specialist tasks (e.g. F3K) but the average sports flier doesn't have to go there - and there are well-regarded free templates available online for such aircraft.

Thanks, Jonathan,

that's reassuring. I have been looking through and it seems all I might ever need is something like the Flysky i-6, which is very well reviewed and very inexpensive. Still needs basic programming, but that seems reasonably easy to do. It even takes OpenTx, which, whilst I still have no clue what it is, seems to be considered a plus point! I didn't think all this looking would get me deep into Chinese business politics, though. Fascinating<G>

Not having handled either, it's difficult to see why there are as many casters aside of the Horus as there are Taranis lovers.

And now we see a growing number poo-pooing Taranis (Frsky) for the Jumper.

Roll up, roll up, for a middleweight fight between......

Jason- I. Do you need a channel to reverse a throttle? Surely this can be done on the appropriate channel reversing of the channel used for the second throttle.

John

Yes, a second channel is necessary. The reverse function is a seperate channel on the esc which makes the motor spin backwards (for reversing the plane).

Reversing the throttle on the transmitter will just make the zero throttle stick position be the full throttle setting and vice versa.

The speed controller has 2 seperate servo leads - one is the normal proportional channel for 'amount of throttle' and one is for direction of rotation.

Taranis, old hat now foxfan, horus is the new dude in town now lol.

It also guides a plane.

Exactly! You will find people who tell you this, that and the other are now de rigueur and without it you are a loser. Whether those same people can actually fly well is another matter - and the tx they use certainly isn't the deciding factor.

Foxfan, best of luck mate. Suggest get your eye in, flying things. Then work out how big a number you are happy to sign up for, on a long term set. And even perhaps, do you actually wish to have a stand out bit of bling. Mid range quality kit is commonplace.

Takes all sorts. My beloved firmly believes that all diamonds are too small.

Ha, no I do like things to be good looking (probably because I ain't), but bling does nothing for me, nor fashion. I reckon my un-programmable DX5e will do for a long while yet as I can't imagine anything I like needing more than 5 channels for a good while yet. OK, I do like to see the wheels disappear on a sporty number, so there's my 5 all used up.

As you say, stick time is everything. I have my first "taster" flight with a club instructor booked for Tuesday. I'll report back next week.

Cheers,

Martin
