EarlyBird
Moving to the front. Tank tray made and fitted. Checking how to fit the undercarriage. Steve
Peter Miller
I do hate aluminium undercarriages. They have no backward "give" and so can simply rip off.
EarlyBird
Top view bottom view Now there are options for the undercarriage that the owner can make a decision on.☺️ Steve
EarlyBird
One engine being test fitted. It fits and the petrol CDI has plenty of cable length to give options for it's location and loads of room for the batteries. Amazing what makes us happy. ☺️ Steve
EarlyBird
I have been working on the tail and here it is. All dry fit, of course. Now back to the front. Unless I fit the wing servo trays.🤔 Steve
EarlyBird
Tail wheel fitted and rudder fitted. Next, I will finish the wings. Steve

EarlyBird
Repeated on the other side. Next servo wire extensions which require holes to be cut in the central bottom balsa sheet. I have previously drawn around a washer and cut out with a sharp knife, but this time I made an aluminium cutter from an old handle and used the drill and file to sharpen it. Bright idea was to leave it in the drill and test on a pice of scrap. Looks good to me and also works on the bench. Then on the first hole, disaster. Learning not to press down on the drill the secon hole looks good. Resisting the temptation to scrap the wing and start again, I teased the damaged balsa up and glued it into place. Good result for a first try. The reason for my change of method is that on the Mighty Barnstormer I have to cut all of the holes in the wing ribs, fortunately they will be cut on the bench. Next is to make up the extension leads. Steve
GrumpyGnome
You could try filing some teeth into your hole cutter......
EarlyBird
Thanks GG, By adding four slots it does seem to work better, more experiments on the way.🙂
EarlyBird
I intended to use servo extension leads but The holes aren't big enough. So, I have to make up the extension in-situ. First thread the wire through, a bit of fishing with the aid of a thin wire. Then solder and heat shrink the joints, at this point brain fog took over and I forgot to take pictures. Next fit maxlock connector and take pictures. Steve
Peter Miller
I always make up paper tubes and fit them. It makes installing things so much easier and also later servicing and repairing things. It is better engineering if you like.
John Rickett 102
Steve, its easy to detach a shroud from a plug. There is a small plastic tab holding the shroud onto the plug, a flat blade screwdriver inserted at the back will lift the shroud from the plug. The tab is only on one side which will be at the top if you lay the cable as in the picture. It will snap back on afterwards.
EarlyBird
Thanks, John, for the excellent tip that works a treat. I could now combine this tip with Peter's paper tube method.👍 Yesterday I managed to take a picture. and not a lot more. Steve

EarlyBird
Working on the servo covers. I am thinking of fixing them in place with the film covering as I have never had to replace a wing servo. Is this a good idea? Steve
john stones 1 - Moderator
Fix with countersunk screws, then film over ?
