Gangster 63 'traditional' power

Several decades late to the party but I've always liked the lines of this bird and have bought the kit.

Any advice on 4 stroke power please? Tried and tested preferably and for me it needn't have much vertical potential.

The power you need will depend on whether it's the traditional foam wing, slab-sided kit or the new Lite version.

IF it's the 'Lite' version with the built up wing - I built one of these (still have it but converted to electric power) and fitted an ASP61 4/.

It flew it very nicely indeed, easily enough for me, although I'm no aero whizz.

If it's the original kit with foam wing, then maybe a .70 or more, but the weight will be creeping up if you go much bigger.

eta forgot to say, I used 12x6 or 12x8 prop on the .61, sorry, cant remember which.

It is the 'classic' sheet and veneered foam 🤤 not the laser cut 'lite'.

The original gangster 63 was great on an os 61 rf pumper its vertical performance was off the scale .If I did one today I would go for an os 91 surpass. I did modify the model to a tail dragger to accommodate the tuned pipe for the rf pumper

Would be 80 or 90 four stroke for me.

Interestingly my 65AX with muffler weighs 625g whereas 81alpha is 610g

I'll go with the four stroke just for the pleasure🤤

81a is a lovely bit of kit. Very economical and reliable runner - (touch wood) I've never had mine cut on me in flight.

 

Just a thought, the Gangster U/C might be quite short for a big four stroke prop, might need a three blade?

A lot I saw fly back in the day, were Webra and HP 61 powered and were very good. No doubt modern 4 strokes are Luverly, but if you want to go all authentic, one of those types of power plants would be good.

Had a Saito 91 in mine a few years ago at 560gms incl silencer is lighter than both of those.... Went like stink on a 13x7 prop.

I think if you were buying then the FA-82 would be the ultimate power to weight four stroke.

No. I had* an OS 55AX in mine and it flew delightfully. * Elevator pushrod issue = matchwood. New kit in the queue.

Irvine 53 in mine, excellent match. Unfortunately sold it to the club crash King who promptly smashed it 😪

I am pretty sure that the Mick Reeves web site tells you that the original flew on an OS40

Love it, when I learnt to fly many years ago on my little old Yamamoto lol, I I was mos impressed by a Gangster flown by the clubs best flier.

I can confirm that the Gangster is still impressive 😃 I have a tradditional "heavy" G 63 with OS 55AX and it is one of my favourite models and it does everything nicely!
