On my last trip to Malta quite a few years ago now, we stayed in the 6 storey block of flats at the extreme right of your picture and our dive school used to be in the very left hand opening of the building at the very centre of the photo beneath the Guillieru hotel, but I believe they've since moved up to the high street.

All in all we stayed there 7 years in a row.......and loved it smiley

I agree Ken, tragic news. We used to dive a lot on Malta and Gozo, and there's a great site called the 'Blue Hole', right next to the Azure Window where you dive straight down then out into the sea right under the Window (worth googling or a visit).

Shudder to think what could have happened if a dive team had been underneath, although in weather like that it would have been very unlikely.

I'm jealous now, and wish I was going back to St Pauls bay wink. Have a great trip mate!

Ahhh this takes me back.

Been to Malta twice. First time we stayed just out of camera shot on the St Paul's Bay image above. Had a great time.

Second time, we booked a Thomson's 4 star square deal holiday, hotel to be allocated on arrival. To our surprise the coach from the airport took us to a small harbour where we boarded a ferry to the island of Gozo, which we had never heard of. We were then bundled into a taxi and dropped off in the middle of the night at what looked like a hard labour camp, judging by the amount of rocks lying all over the place. There were no street lights on Gozo at the time, so we couldn't really make out where we were.

The taxi was met by a well dressed man who insisted on carrying all our luggage down a number of narrow allyways, before coming to a halt at a small stone built "out-house". He opened the door to reveal the most magnificent, cleanest, coolest hotel room we had ever seen. We were shattered after our journey, so we just dropped into bed wondering where we were and what the outside would look like in daylight.

When we awoke, we went for a short walk outside. It was nothing like the built up area that is the Malta we were expecting. All that could be seen were rocks, rocks and more rocks. We wondered what we were going to do for the fortnight we were due to stay there. We were feeling rather cheated at this point. When we got back to our room, the bed had been made and a continental breakfast with freshly baked croissants, freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh tea and coffee was waiting for us and the air conditioning had been turned on. There was also a card from our Thomson's rep, inviting us to the usual welcome meeting. We don't normally bother with these meetings which we just see as an excuse to sell you trips you don't want, but we decided to go along to find out what the crack was.

A number of other Brits were there, who were outraged that they had been dropped off in the middle of nowhere with nothing to do - there wasn't even a bingo hall or casino for heaven's sake! They insisted that they be relocated immediately to the main island of Malta, where they had paid to go. We decided that we would have a look round before we objected, as we didn't know what was outside the hotel complex yet. Turns out we stayed on Gozo for the full fortnight.

We discovered that the hotel had a secluded beach half a mile away which was accessed via the hotels private transport and staircase from the cliff top to the beach. The trips that were organised by the Thomson's rep would not be viable using the normal holiday coaches, now that the other British guests had left, so we would use the hotels private limousine and chauffeur. I think we had booked to go to the Azure Window tour, but when we got in the limo, the driver said, "right, where do you want to go? - you've got me for the day" He took us everywhere on the island and gave us the full guided tour. He was a really nice man, and would not take a tip at the end of the day no matter how much we insisted, so we left something in the car.

There wasn't much to do apart from walking, which we love, but the hotel facilities were tops and there were some great cliff top walks around the island (avoiding mid day sun of course). We quickly began to appreciate the laid back pace of the island. About half way through the second week of the holiday, we decided to have a day trip to St Pauls bay on the main island for old times sake. We walked the 2 or 3 miles to the harbour, caught the ferry and then boarded a bus to St Paul's Bay. I'm not sure whether we travelled 2 or 3 bus stops before we decided that the main island was too busy and noisy for us and we preferred Gozo. We got off the bus, walked back and caught the ferry back.

Every time we returned to our room, the bed had been made or the corner of the sheets turned down after our wonderful (but small) nouveau cuisine evening meal. Funny thing is, we never saw any staff (other than catering staff) for the full fortnight we were there. We were not allowed to use money to pay for pool-side or dining room drinks for the full fortnight, instead we added everything to our room account. No prices were ever displayed for anything, so we took it easy fearing the worse. We needn't have worried. We discovered that prices were rock bottom when we settled up.

Turns out that this was the most relaxing, best value, most memorable holiday we have ever had. We would love to go back but we could never have afforded to have stayed there if we didn't drop onto the package bargain price. I seem to remember we paid £400 each (35 years ago) and the book price was about £1800.

This is the Hotel Ta Cenc where we stayed.

Writing this has brought back so many wonderful memories.......
