r6dan
Use flux whenever you solder anything it makes someone who thinks they aren`t too good a soldering GOD I used it for the first time today and it is well worth using
Spice Cat
The trouble with flux is that some are active, in other words they clean the metal. Problem is that they can continue to clean the metal for some years to come eating away at it. Passive flux is best, in my opinion, but the mating surfaces need to be clean first. As for a soldering God, I finally cracked soldering heavy duty wire onto a 60A Deans connector. Hold the wire verticle, with the end to be soldered at the top, then pre heat with a soldering iron. This seems to help the process very well.
BB
Rubbish (voice of Anarchy). Depends on what you solder. If youy tin, it ain't needed on anything less than 3mm copper. Anything above, use it & epoxy to secure the finish. Then theres brazing, not quite a solder. But, not a weld ! Ooooh the choices & opinions ---- Here they cvomw ! Romeo Whisky
If you buy the solder specially designed for electrical work it incorporates a core (or multi-core) of the correct type of flux anyway, so you do not need any additional flux. The biggest problem most people have with soldering is that they don't get the item to be soldered hot enough. I use a cheapo 30W soldering iron with pointed tip, and use 4mm or 3.5mm gold connectors. I pre-tin the wire (melt some solder into the bare wire filaments), then rest the tip of the iron in the hole in the side of the connector cup for a few moments before melting some solder into the cup, then push the wire in, and only remove the iron when the tinning on the wire melts and fuses with the wire in the cup. I use a "helping-hands" gizmo to hold the connector, angled up at 45° with the side hole upwards. Never had a failed joint.

Myron Beaumont
Hi Phil and thanks I'm off the cruches & onto a walking stick & can walk like a duck unaided . Trouble is the amount of mud outside the farmhouse limiting my travels (pub etc). Getting used to living primitavely 'cos the whole place really needs a total makeover to bring it in line with even 100 years ago . My models are still in my campervan -Top priority is to convert an outbuilding to a workshop / hangar of course
