Graham Davies 3
Great stuff Richard. I may well have started a 'weathering' thread some time back; maybe transfer this great tutorial into that one? Here:

RICHARD WILLS
I'll plough on on this thread Graham , as people building Spits (there are quite a few out there ) only have to visit one spot . This one is a little bit about a Mk1 "looky likey" from the existing Mk IX kit too .

Paul Johnson 4
Just a little bit of info for those who haven't flown theirs yet. C of G range is 85mm to 95mm from centre of leading edge. In the manual it's from the rear of F2, same location as leading edge. Mine is set to 90mm and is a dream to fly, nose heavy and she'll fall into a turn, tail heavy and it's a real handful VERY sensitive to elevator movement. You need to be very accurate in setting this up.
Graham Davies 3
That looks amazing Paul. Most people looking at that picture would assume it's the real thing.
Paul Johnson 4
Thanks Graham, she flies as good as she looks...

GrumpyGnome
Nice pic. Very breezy here on East coast..... fingers crossed tomorrow's better
Paul Johnson 4
Had a NNW here 10 gusting to 18 mph, according to the Met Office. The Spitfire is really stable and handles a breeze well.
Eric Robson
A tidy up and fitted with a real engine, 52 FS. I was not happy with 5 min flights then spending the evening charging batteries. Waiting for the wind to die down, still very windy in the North East.
Paul Johnson 4
Because I fly early mine need to be electric, also no clearing up of all that gunk post flight. But if you prefer IC, it's a personal choice thing. No right or wrong.
GrumpyGnome
Totally agree - both have pros and cons. I fly both. We have no noise restrictions, but I don't fly ic early in the morning, or late evenings (going to propose that club rules include some restrictions, so we avoid any complaints as we now have a number of petrol engines fitted with standard 'mufflers'.. ). Paul Johnson 4
I've been spoilt with the number of full size warbirds I've watched in flight/up close and found the model engine very lacking to fulfil that void. There's only one model I've heard that blew me away. A seafury with a 250cc moki. Unfortunately my pockets are not THAT deep. So until they release a 1/8 scale Merlin for £30 I'll have to stick with the electric..
Ron Gray
You've obviously not heard a Laser 200 in-line twin then Paul

Whardav
Have purchased a rear wheel from the Avios Spitfire looks like it will fit very nicely. Love all the lovely work and education Richard, spot on for a novice like me.
RICHARD WILLS
Yes , the Avios Spitfire provided some useful details . However in typical fashion , they are hardly ever available . On another note , regarding Ron's wonderful laser twin noise , you probably heard two birds having a very animated conversation . I shall translate (being fluent ) . Incredibly , they were not discussing the magnificent Laser , long stroke twin . They were outraged at the increasing price of "Trill " . Which any Budgie owner will know , has been relatively stable for the last twenty years . Apparently cuttle fish is also difficult to find , and small mirrors .... I wouldn't be surprised. I used the R Wills guide to Latvia and asked the locals for directions to the post office. I ended up in a very odd establishment and now have a Husband, and a squint...
David Hazell 1
Any advice about which OLEO's to get and where from if I fancy replacing the sprung wire at some point?
Paul Johnson 4
Mine were from Hobby*£%* but there are pitfalls with using them, without the coiled spring anything but a landing that kisses the ground or a rough strip will rapidly remove them and the mount from the wing.
