john stones 1 - Moderator
Then it's build the tips up before fitting, my measuring lets me down so, these will be fitted before joining the wing, then I can make sure they both align. Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Nice tips John BEB PS I may get modded for that - if none of the other mods are looking into the MB I may even have to mod myself. Although I do think I'd be being a bit harsh on myself.
john stones 1 - Moderator
I'm very flattered cheers BEB John
Craig Thomas
Your right BEB. A very nice pair of tips. Wish my tips looked like that. There, we can both be modded. 😅😅Edited By Craig Thomas on 16/01/2016 01:48:55Edited By Craig Thomas on 16/01/2016 01:49:
Chris Barlow
I wish more people would show their tips in build blogs. I think this will be the first model I've ever build where the tips are added after completing the wing. I've always built them in whilst the wing is still on the board. I think I'll hang back a little and see how people are going to join them before deciding what to do with mine!
Peter Miller
You jst butt glue them on. Tips are tertiary structure, i.e. none laod bearing and are simply there to stop the fraying at the end. and smooth the airflow a bit.
john stones 1 - Moderator
There's too much frivolity in this years MB, anyone would think you're enjoying yourselves John

john stones 1 - Moderator
Tips are glued on, then I've picked a firm bit of sheet and fitted it, and capped the ribs, starting to look like a wing now John

john stones 1 - Moderator
Thanks lads, my building's got neater since I've been on here, still average though John
McG 6969
Very neat, very tidy, John. One question though: what is the reason for gluing the wing tips afterwards? Couldn't the tip be fixed when the half wing is still pinned to the board? Cheers Chris BRY - BE / CTR Wing Tip Control Edited By McG 6969 on 17/01/2016 07:49:
Peter Miller
As far as I am concerned there aree two reasons. First, it makes the wing a little shorter to handle until the tips go on. Waving an extra 6" of wing around in a confined space can cause hangar rash or , rather, more hangar rash. Second, it is rather difficult getting the bottom sheet on the tip while it is still on the board.
McG 6969
Thanks Peter, for those 2 very good reasons. I'm afraid that I still have a lot to ask in the near future... Cheers Chris BRU - BE / CTR Questions Control
john stones 1 - Moderator
By time you reach gluing the tips on, your wing will be rigid Chris, so no risk of warping it. Easier to work on if lifted from board. I have a big indoor room to work in so added the tips now. As Eric Morecambe once said...I'm playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order. John
AVC
Hi JohnNice tips indeed 😉John, did you find ant issue when fitting the tip rib? Had the rib and the support the same height? Ib my case they din't fully match and I Wonder wheter I've made any mistake...
john stones 1 - Moderator
Not quite sure what you mean AVC, I used the sketch of the tip and aileron section to draw a line on the end rib, then fitted it, did require a bit of sanding before sheeting and fitting cap strips, but I put that down to my cutting of parts. Very happy with it myself, feels strong and light, the extra rib on sheet itself looks good. John p.s cheers Percy
AVC
Hi John The photo below is one of my tip. The height of the tip rib and the triangular support are not the same, the rib is higher and it shouldn't be
Chris Barlow
Looks like a wing now! Progressing nicely John. Can't wait to play with my tips now. Cutting/sanding etc!
john stones 1 - Moderator
Ah right..i used my wing to cut the wedges then shaped the others to accept the curve of the front sheet and get a nice flow out to the tip. John
Geoff S
Posted by AVC on 17/01/2016 12:55:27: Hi John The photo below is one of my tip. The height of the tip rib and the triangular support are not the same, the rib is higher and it shouldn't be I've been pondering the wing tips, too. I noticed that the tip rib is bigger than the cross section at the main spar. I think it's another modification introduced after Peter released his drawing. The height on the cross section is 10mm and rib is 15mm. I intend to adjust the tip rib height to suit the tip brace by slicing 5mm off the bottom. AVC
Hi Geoff. I think this is what I'll do also. The tip rib is not glued so I'll adjust it to the actual section
john stones 1 - Moderator
Not a lot done but ready to join wing after I've sanded the 1/8 strips up, I like that it has inset ailerons they look better, and I'm chuffed with the way tips turned out, nice and light but a strong design John
