Bob Cotsford
Do you always use just the two hinges per surface john? I've got into the habit of using at least three in case one fatigues, at least the surface will stay on.
john stones 1 - Moderator
No Bob just because these ailerons are small, these Kavan are good quality and I've never had one break yet, having said that 3 would make sense John
AndyD
i dont glue mine but just use a cocktail stick, dont matter how hard i try if i use glue i always seem to glue one hinge solid.
john stones 1 - Moderator
I smear Vaseline on the hinge bit, works every time John
AndyD
might give it another try then, theres someone on youtube who just glues then a quick bend when set breaks the glue joint with a little clean up,the idea is if the glue gets on the hinge leave it as touching it forces it in the joint.not tryied it dont think i will be either. Peter Miller
I just use Kavan or similar Mylar hinges, the ones with a sort of tissue bonded on. I did have a batch of Sig EZEE hinges where the tissue was not bonded to the mylar properly. never bought those again,
john stones 1 - Moderator
Not a great deal done, hinged rudder up and the elevators and started on the fin fairing, I held it in place and drew round it, then took bulk off before gluing on I used parcel tape to stop me straying when sanding. Gary Manuel
What's the purpose of the packing and post you've got shoved in the fin slot John?

Gary Manuel
Posted by john stones 1 on 04/02/2016 19:31:48: Hey up Gary, you got owt done on your O/D ? Took me a while to realise what "O/D" meant, but what I'm building is not really my "Own Design". I would not know where to start with designing my own model. I found myelf with a Saito 82a (Please don't mention the 10 years old Funtana it came from) and a desire for a fun-fly IC model to put it in. I couldn't find a suitable ARTF model at a reasonable price anywhere, so I decided to make my own. My budget was VERY low - ideally £0. I remembered that while I was building my last WOT4, I had drawn around all the parts on to a large sheet of paper in case I needed to make any spare parts. I had an old one piece wing from a 3D plane in my shed. I thought that the fuselage from a WOT4 could be modified to take the 3D wing. All it needed was a bit of reshaping of the fuselage to suit the 3D wing and some larger control surfaces at the rear end. I think you'll agree when you see it that I have gone REALLY large with the rear end control surfaces. I will be fitting an APC 14x4W prop, so it will be all about low speed flying so I'm hoping the it will not fall apart on the first flight. Not made any progress for about a month, but it'll be ready before our flying field has dried out properly. If it flies well it'll be down to Chris Foss and good luck. If it doesn't, it'll be put down to experience. Gary.
john stones 1 - Moderator
I can't fault that Gary I've done a few of my own builds just from looking at shapes off models I like the look of, draw a straight line for a fuzz and work of that, rib profile drawn free hand, tail and wing worked out using TLAR and jobs a good un, gives you a buzz when it all works out. Devcon1
John, Could yours be the first to finish? I'm getting Ballerina bamboozled if that's a real word. So many builds going it's hard sometimes to keep track, great fun seeing them all develop. Regards John
john stones 1 - Moderator
I think there'll be quite a few finish before me John, yes I agree it's enjoyable reading how people put their own thoughts into the same plan, blogs have been good nice and laid back. john stones 1 - Moderator
A bit more plodding done, elevators joined up and hinged, I went with a spruce joiner on mine, plenty of movement there. John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Next bit is w/bolt plate, I glued two tabs in fuzz and a bit of square to the plate, then it's glued in using 30 min epoxy, I used a bit of good ply for this. John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Fuzz mounted undercarriage on mine, so I picked a piece of good quality ply 1/8 ish then I rebate the fuzz to fit it flush, with a bit of triangular inside the fuzz it makes a much stronger mounting point, will be covered with some 1/8 lite ply when bottoms sheeted. Chris Barlow
Looking good John. Any indications as to balance yet? I think a few Ballerinas are coming out nose heavy?
McG 6969
Great tailplanes there & nice progression, John. Is there a particular reason for mounting your u/c on the fuselage instead of to the wing? john stones 1 - Moderator
Not yet Chris, my motor's a 35/48 and I've loads of wiggle room for lipo n esc plus servos in tail, it'll be o.k Other Chris, just because it makes storage and transport easier plus it'll fit in a wing bag better Chris. john stones 1 - Moderator
Drilled F2 for the wing dowel, you can see it looks low, but there's a ply reinforcement on there and u/c plate will add strength as well. Dowel will stay unglued till it's covered, happy with that fit as I cut the parts myself John
