Ron Gray
I will reserve judgment until it’s built and flown Brian!
Ron Gray
All being well I should be able to offer my club mates a choice of 6 of these models to build for next year’s competition at a lowly cost of circa £10. They can use the powertrain and servos from this year’s Hanky Planky’s so that keeps the costs down really low.
leccyflyer
That sounds like a great plan to encourage a group effort and lots of laughs. We tend to swap the radio, motors, escs between the In-Service depron models and those which are mothballed for a while, but micro-servos are so cheap, if the donors have a chance of being used again, it's easiest to keep the servos and linkages in those mothballed airframes. Daren Cogdon
I forgot I had this project in storage. It's a scaled-down FT Spitfire, made from 3mm foam board. I had been planning to rebuild the fuselage...
Daren Cogdon
Something else I've just unearthed - a set of plans for a 63" Tony Nijhuis Spitfire IX. Hmm..... foam board??
Graham Davies 3
Daren, I'm doing a 74 (1/6th scale) spitfire from underlay insulation. Just gathering a few more bits and pieces before I crack on in. It's going to be reasonably 'scale' and if I can make the sums look right, it will be a Mk1. Full fat flaps and retracts, target weight below 8 pounds; 6S power. I found a plan on outerzone which I believe is a slight upscale of Brian Taylor's design. I intend to use these for outlines and some key points such as the retract mounts. The rest will be from my fevered brow... I'll keep you posted Graham

Ron Gray
I haven't been able to get out to the workshop for the last few days due to family staying with us but they left today so I was able to make a bit of a start gluing the Corsy together Fuselage sides glued to the front former, the battery tray and the top cross brace. I modified the design to incorporate cut outs for these as that helps with aligning the fuse sides. I used Gorilla Glue Clear for this part of the build. The front Depron former is recessed to allow for the plywood motor mount. Another change to the design was to taper the fuse sides in at the tail (the plan shows a parallel sided fuse) so top and bottom covering sheets were tapered to suit. The wings had their top and bottom doublers added to form the KFm-4 profile, and for this I used UHU Pro contact adhesive making sure that it was spread ver thin over the mating surfaces. The LE was sanded to profile but, like the Thunderbob, I am not sanding the TE so they are left square. Sanding Depron produces lots of fine dust so I strongly advise either doing the work outside or to wear a face mask.
Daren Cogdon
The tapered tail end will make it look a lot more scale, I think.
Ron Gray
A lot of sanding on the wing joining sections to get the angles for the gull wing, then glued together using Gorilla Glue Brown
Ron Gray
Something that annoys me about these small builds is that I don’t have any suitable size control horns and certainly none that can be firmly attached to thin Depron without resorting to thin ply reinforcement. Do I decided to make my own using my laser cutter. and fitted to the elevator and ailerons

Daren Cogdon
I haven't been sitting doing nothing! I built a new fuselage for my 85% FT Spitfire on Thursday, and will be finishing that off over the weekend...
Ron Gray
I wasn’t going to put any paint on it until after the maiden, but Unfortunately it is quite nose heavy so the 3D printed cowl is not going to be fitted - yet. Ron Gray
Maiden flight of Corey yesterday, unfortunately no vids of it. As predicted it was quite (very) nose heavy despite 20g of weight added to the tail but still flew very well but not as floaty as the Thunderbob. I've now chopped 30mm off the nose to pull the motor back to try and get a better balance and will re-maiden it tomorrow. If that fails then I will alter the plans and extend the length of the fuse behind the CofG. The Thunderbob flew brilliantly and was flown by other club members too.
Ron Gray
I flew the Corsy again today with the chopped down nose, it was a lot better and allowed me to remove 10g tail weight. So I’m going to redesign it putting the nose back to where it was but extend the rear fuselage by 40mm. I’m also going to increase the wing chord to make it more ‘floaty’.
Daren Cogdon
A bit more work done on the 85% FT Spitfire. I'm thinking I might put the elevator and rudder servos under the cockpit, to keep the CofG further forward.
john davidson 1
Two FT Spits in our club now, both superb flyers,, ,,, lightly loaded makes a good and forgiving plane
Ron Gray
Corsey Mk2. I’ve built a new model from a slightly re-designed plan. The nose length has been put back to original but the fuse length has been increased by about 40mm to give me a better chance of getting the CoG in the correct place. I’ve also increased the chord of the wing by about 40mm too as I want it to be more floaty. Time will tell if these mods work!

Ron Gray
Probably too scale like and not enough cartoon! Oh well I’ll see how it flies when we get a break in the weather. Edited October 19, 2023 by Ron Gray
