David Ashby - Moderator
Our club has a good number of junior learners at the moment, they're doing well but using a sim between flying sessions wouldn't do them any harm either. Trouble is, their means are limited and the dad's are still recovering after the initial trainer and radio purchases so I wondered if there are any half-decent free or inexpensive sims they could download for use with their DX5s and DX6s? Nothing fancy is required just a simple sim with reasonable feel that they can fly a simple model with to help between flying sessions. Suggestions would be welcome. John F
David, I use Clearview which is free to download : **LINK** There are lots of models, both fixed wing and rotary, as well as scenery but you can download more models and scenery too to increase the choice, all for free. There is also a small but dedicated fan base who create more models. Details you can get from their forums.
David Ashby - Moderator
Superb, thanks John. I'll pass that on, I assume a simple USB cable is sufficient?
Eamonn Fahey
David, there is also R/C Desk Pilot. Be aware that some of the free flight sims will not run on Windows 8. Check before downloading! Eamonn.

John F
David, Yes, a USB cable works fine. It might sound weird but it was free! It would seem they have cottoned onto the popularity! I am sorry for getting your hopes up; I thought it was still free. I should have ckecked before I posted the link.
Frank Skilbeck
You can get a free version of multiplex's flight simulator here http://www.multiplex-rc.de/en/service/downloads/software.html doesn't have all the models of the full version but could be useful for what you need. Not sure how you'd interface the Spektrum Tx's to it though.
Steve Hargreaves - Moderator
RC Planemaster is a pretty good sim too....& only around the £20 mark. Be aware that it doesn't work with Windows 8 either though (cue rant on what a pain in the wotsit W8 is......)
chris basson
I Think Picasim can use a USB controller- there is a free and a paid version...The Physics are Very good!Just type Picasim into your favourite search engine
Dave Bran
To my knowledge Clearview has never been free. (and I have had it for eight years). The Granddaddy of free Flying Simulators is Flying Model Simulator, or FMS. Not having used it beyond XP Pro, I have no idea if it is onwards compatible. And its not plug n play! My now 10 year old grandson uses it with a USB Tx. He started at seven. There was a massive user base and a large number of people producing freeware planes (including me). GrumpyGnome
I run an old copy of RC Planemaster on W8.1 ............. I think this is how I did it..... Copy the CD to your hard drive and install from there Drop an icon on your desktop (the 'traditional' looking one, not the tiled one) then change the properties to run in Compatability Mode (XP I think). Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
John M - we have just delete a post above for promoting hacked software - then you re-add it! That has been deleted as well. The fact that "they are selling it to everyone" is immaterial - it is still illegal. Please do not post links to people selling hacked software! Bob Cotsford
FMS used to be 'the' free sim, is it still around?
Ian Jones
At the moment FMS doesn't run on Windows8, as far as I can tell there hasn't been any development since XP. I recently came across an open source sim though I haven't tried it so can tell you little other than the website is here and there's some stuff on you tube: Ian
Bob Cotsford
Looks as though the Win 7 version never got past beta testing - here under downloads Edited By Bob Cotsford on 28/07/2015 05:30:
Ian Jones
Followed your link Bob and on to the downloads page but I don't see anything for Win 7. Any chance of another link directly to the version you are refering to? A Win 7 version just might work with Win8 or better still 10. There maybe a fix for FMS Beta 7 (Windows 9x/ME/2000) to work with Vista/Win7 (perhaps others?) here though I have also heard of problems if the computer does not have any serial ports. Bob Cotsford
You're right Ian, it's beta 7, not Win7. I guess the alpha 8.5 is the latest version and I'm pretty sure it runs under Win 7, I did have it installed prior to having to reinstall Windows last year but have never bothered to download it since,
barry knight
As I think someone has already said. Clearview. Vey good sim with photo real scenery. I can personally say I had a Decathlon and managed to down load the exact model on Clearview. It was almost identical in the way it flew.
