Cuban8 Posted September 10, 2017 Share Posted September 10, 2017 It's got to be at least 15 years since a bought an RCM&E, but my innate parsimony got the better of me whilst flicking through the latest issue in WHS and with the flourish of my contactless debit card (much less stressful than a real fiver and some shrapnel) the deed was done. Nicely produced and with some excellent photography (which attracted me to buy) I read the mag cover to cover last evening. Not convinced that the Wot 4 review warranted the same coverage as the superb Lysander (4 1/2 pages each) - what more can be said about any of the Wot family that couldn't have been condensed into half of what was allocated, and yes, I understand that it was a new light-weight version. Personally, I'd have preferred another couple of pages of detail on the Lysander's build, in particular some further background on the 'hand fabricated silencer' and info on the application of the camouflage and radio installation. Nice to see that Brian 'one flick' Winch (nobbled by the safety system in his review) is still going strong after all these years and his review of the RCGF engine was fine.............except that to dismiss the muffler as a 'well made and neat little item' with a 'healthy bark to it that can be tamed if you see fit' was an extraordinary thing to say given that these little petrol engines are notorious 'field losers' with their ineffective standard silencers. Perhaps in Oz, Brian is miles from anyone else - not so for most of us in the UK. The Cosford report was excellent with its nice balance of words and pictures as was the sloping article. Had to contain my laughter at Graham's A10 review, not because it was a poor effort- which it wasn't , of course; but an almost five hundred quid foamy with batteries costing £120 each ...............for a sub four minute flight and an ESC letting go, has to be joke played on the model buying public. Despite Graham's closing remarks, I fear the model will quietly be retired to his loft/garage to gather dust. Liked the Albatross build (six pages, better!) - the flight controller article for fixed wing is intriguing and deserves much further coverage as promised - Pete Miller's model is not my cup of tea, but the build article is good - same goes for 'Half Tone', Torrent 110 and the X-Vert. Very noticeable that the big multipage adverts from Al's, SMC and others of years past are conspicuous by their absence - that must be a worry. However, it's encouraging to see Tony Nijhuis designs taking a full page and as I was one of those who had 'a hair on fire moment' (still got plenty left) over the Traplet plans debacle, seeing Sarik Hobbies' ad is encouraging. So, all in all a bit of a 'curates egg' for me, but I take my hat off to the production staff of the mag who are putting together a fine product in difficult times for the hobby and their industry and I would certainly be sad to no longer have the option of buying the magazine. My two penneth' Loved the Albatross build, and yes 4.5 pages to a lighter WOT seemed a little unecassary, and there was a fine article in the making for the Lysander. Wording a 'custom made exhaust...' with no further information was a tease - I've seen this with articles on large scale aircraft; it's a general overview and that's about it! Drones I pass over as they are not my bag so won't comment on that. Brian's engine reviews are always interesting and worh a read - but they are nearly always on an engine that's far out of reach for the most of us I'm afraid, either financially or noise. How about a comparison of the 40 sizes (they do exist!) SC, OS, Four strokes... Saito vs OS vs Laser - the bread and butter of the club circuit; comparisons of fuel.. I became a subscriber 10 years ago and have found that over the years the magazine has changed out of all recognition: the quality of presentation and the number of photos is much better, and the print is larger (yes, I have joined the ranks of the grey-headed with glasses). I agree with C8 and Stevo: I am not interested in ARTFs and I feel too much space is wasted on them, but it is a personal thing and I can quite understand that very few of us today ‘balsa bash’, so something is required to fill the pages. Whittaker’s articles are always worth reading and his photography is excellent. Will we see more of his ‘Funky Fokker’? But oh dear me! Some of the grammar and lack of the definite and indefinite articles, and ‘s for plurals indicates a lack proof reading which would make the content easier to read. Trevor Crook Posted September 13, 2017 Share Posted September 13, 2017 Yes, if you've any inclination to buy the magazine more than a few times a year, a subscription is a bargain. I agree with most of what has been said above. The content mix is never going to satisfy everyone but covers most aspects of our increasingly diverse hobby very well. The production quality is excellent. Peter's Destiny looks excellent, and if it flies anything like as well as his Ballerina it will be a fabulous model. The subscriber only area also looks to be worthwhile. Just keep the real building coverage coming and don't get too carried away with drones (plenty of other mags specialising in them) or other niche areas of limited appeal and I'll be happy.
