Ok, well, on a less sad note...the February RCME has just arrived here in the land of the long white cloud (NZ) and I notice a review of a Staufenbiel Dornier Do 27. Did anyone else notice the registration of this plane?

I know it is always bad to explain a joke, but for those unfamiliar with German animals, ente is German for duck...so the registration of this plane is effectively D-Duck. I presume this would have been inherited from the full size example.

I remember seeing the registration D-ENTE. But as my German is limited to "eine bierre bitte" or at a push, "zwei bierre bitte" (and I don't guarantee the spelling is anywhere near correct!) I failed totally to get the "Donald Duck" connection! I did vaguely think of it as being a tooth though!

And it is indeed "inherited" from a full-size example.

The original D-ENTE featured heavily in German wildlife documentaries by Bernhard Grzimek. It also starred in his 1959 film "Serengeti Shall Not Die"

Although it didn't always fare very well.

More recently a replica has been produced see more details here.

The model BTW is proving to be a good solid no nonsense performer that's a delight to fly in good conditions, but also handles a wind pretty well.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was made redundant in 1991 as was everyone from Lewisham Architects. I left on the same day as the chap singing on the video and we organised and shared a leaving party. He hoped to become a successful singer and was assisted on the song by a well know artist who has appeared in the news this week.

Bureaucracy goes bananas

On asking for a hamburger in a fast food joint "We aren't alowed to call them 'hamburgers' as there is no ham in them" A certain German city on the shores of the North Sea will, in future, be referred to as 'Beefburg' or just 'Burg'

On a jar of peanut butter 'Warning - contains peanuts' I( would like to think it did - but it doesn't have any butter in it)

On asking for a 'pound' of something, being told "We aren't allowed to sell by the pound - just the kilo'. Strange, the French, who invented the system, call a half kilo a 'livre' and the Germans call it a 'Pfunt' (both mean 'a pound'

Mike, I enjoyed listening to that, it's nice to read that Kate might be making some kind of come-back.

Daithi, I couldn't agree with you more. The basic principle of Europe coming together is a good thing, but it's become overlaid with centralising power politics and staggering bureaucracy which make it frightening. The whole hamburger thing is utter nonsense. The hamburger is named after Hamburg and I guess that the "Ham" bit derives from "Heim", or home, hamlet etc. , otherwise it would have been called Schinkenburg! The word butter in peanut butter clearly relates to it's consistency and it is used for other things that aren't dairy products anyway.

I also found out years ago that German fraus when out shopping will often ask for "ein pfundt" of potatos. The reason for that I suppose that is that Imperial measurements were derived from practical experience, whereas metric is based on mathematical convenience and not reality. We all see the logic of it because it makes calculation simple, but in reality the apparent logic in using e.g. the freezing and boiling points of water as fixed references for 0 and 100 degrees C actually doesn't make real sense because they they vary consistently with atmospheric pressure. To make sense, absolute zero should be 0 and not -273. Metric will never change the fact that Pi equals 3.146 recurring and computers use binary anyway.

Sadly some of these things that sound silly actually are disastrous, I've spent a lot of time involved with European issues with the commission etc. attended meetings in the CEN offices etc and you realise that corruption, political manipulation and deceit are rife in Brussels and the degree to which deliberate mis-information is used to achieve political goals with no basis of democracy is dreadful. It's no wonder that so many people are disillusioned with what seemed to be a wonderful idea being totally mislead and used to try and control everything that we do. The hamburger is the tip of a very large ice-berg.

That's a bit sexist Colin. May I point out that ex-pat British men have also been known to order "ein Pfund" of produce. wink 2

Did you know that when Mr. Celsius proposed his temperature scale, he fixed the boiling point of water at 0 degrees and the freezing point at 100 degrees.

He also proposed an atmospheric pressure at which his scale would be valid.
