fly boy3
Hi all, just wondered what other builders use to protect the plan from glues etc before a build. Thank you.

Levanter
Have two methods Choice 1. Grease proof oven paper if I am going to avoid cyano and the plan printing is nice and clear. I find it easy to handle and cut. Choice 2. Cling film. My clear backings from coverings are very rarely big enough to be useful so they generally get chucked. Piers Bowlan
I have used cellophane for years. It is very cheap from eBay or Amazon also craft or art shops. Much better than the covering backing. Completey clear, does not ruck up, and nothing will stick to it.
Craig Carr
Hello Fly Boy, I'm the same as Chris, the plastic wrapping that Florists use to wrap bouquets etc. It lies lovely and flat and nowt sticks to it My local florists usually gives me a load for a notional couple of quid. Stuart Z
Hi I use polythene sheet bought off Amazon. Sold by garden centres. Huge amount for little money. I use it to make a “tent” for airbrushing and sheeting over plans when building. Goes a long way and very durable! S

Martin Harris - Moderator
I'm another clingfilmerist but I do have a roll of proper plan protector that I came across recently. I often see the advice to use backing film but as I (a) mostly use Profilm with opaque backing and (b) don't find the pieces I cut off would be large enough anyway, it's never seemed very practical to use. Martin Harris - Moderator
I do, but it hasn't given me any grief. What sort of problems have you had?
Bob Cotsford
The last few builds I just used sellotape on the joint positions. Not much seems to stick to sellotape!

Cuban8
Re clingfilm and cyano, against my better judgement I put a layer of clingfilm over my latest plan and had the wood weld itself to the stuff because of the cyano that had crept between the two surfaces. A pain to fix but just inconvenient picking and sanding the stuff off. Never again.
Stearman65
I asked the same question since I came back to building after an 11 year layoff. I used to use clingfilm but it's expensive & messy. I was pointed to florists clear cellophane. I've been using it for a couple of weeks, however, the cyno I'm using sticks to it, It's cheap enough to use new every time.
Piers Bowlan
I have never had cyano stick to cellophane, maybe it is the biodegradable cellophane that sticks to cyano?

I've been using a roll of catering quality "Polycling" liberated from my wife's stocks since I started building again around the turn of the century. I've had little difficulty separating plans, film or balsa without damage over numerous builds.
John Tee
My experience of clingfilm and cyano was that it went through any pinhole and stuck everything to the plan. Obviouslt heavy handed with the cyano. john
Robin Etherton
I just rub a candle over the plan. Nothing sticks to a waxy surface.

Problem with that method the candle grease gets on the wood & nothing will stick to the wood.
