First taste of the sky

I'm calling time on this weekend already as I am busy digging holes for fence posts for two fences.

Looks like my anti-social neighbours have done a moonlight flit so it's time to step in and rebuild the front fence that they kindly destroyed with a quad bike and then the same with the back fence. However, the back fence currently 3 feet high will be getting replaced with a 6 foot version before anybody else moves in.

I'll be using the same post holes but need to break out the existing postcrete and then enlarge to take 4 x 4 posts instead of 3 x 3 as is the case currently.

Then ...... I have two sheds to take down and replace with a supershed ( 5.5m x 4.5m ) which I am currently awaiting quotes for as it will be a bespoke build.

So .... busy times ahead.

I must have been bad in a former life .... :classic_sad: .... I'll be needing my holiday to Zante when it comes around in 6 weeks or so.

Cheers

Made a start on the front fence ...... knackered .... using an electric breaker to breakout the old posts ..... still hard work.

Never mind ..... the weather is not looking good so a good way to burn my time and earn some brownie points towards my new mancave.

Still waiting for the joiner to give me a quote yet.

More as it happens.

No flying this weekend.

Finishing front fence hopefully tonight

...... and then it's on to the back fence for the weekend. If weather is even half decent, the rear fence will be completed this weekend. ..... 1.8m high by about 15m long ( ish )

Then it's down with my small shed, and get timber for a 4.5 x 5.5m sub-base for the new shed. The new shed will be ordered shortly from Noah's garden buildings for delivery end of October.

That just leaves the dismantling of my current larger ( model ) shed before the new shed arrives.

Apart from that ....... nothing to do.

Beautiful day today ..... just typical .....

Got my front fence completed last night and made a start on the rear fence today. Got the old one down and the posts dug out and concreted in for the new fence spars and slats to go up tomorrow.

Happy with that.

And my next project .... getting rid of the first of two sheds.

Apologies for the upside down photos. If anyone can correct this please do. It only seems to happen from my pad. Very frustrating.

Hold it the other way up is a non tech solution.

Hi Simon,

No gold bullion but some pretty pricey models and tools etc. Both these sheds will be away in a matter of weeks. The smaller one being the first, hopefully next weekend. Then two sub-bases 9ft x 14ft each to be build from 3 x 2 with a DPC on tip where the new shed will be mounted.

I need to empty the big shed after the small one is gone and I get a delivery date for the new shed. I haven't placed the order yet as they want me to take delivery too early so I'll hang off and organise it for when I come back from Zante.

I'll probably start a fresh post to show the new shed being assembled and the interior fit out. My new modelling mancave.

Thanks PatMc for sorting out the wonky photo's. Appreciated.

Well ..... as you will have gathered, absolutely no flying time what so ever over the last few weeks and no prospects either. I am going full pelt with some home projects at the moment in the form of fences and a new mancave and once that's been completed, I have a fitted kitchen added to the list by mumsie. I think I am safe in say that flying time has been severely curtailed for this side of the year. ..... nothing I can do about it. If I'm lucky I may get the odd weekend here or there but that's it.

Still raring to go forward though .....

To be fair you did miss some cracking flying weather last Saturday, north of the border, as you were taking sheds to bits. It did occur to me that in putting your models and equipment essentially "offline" until your shed project is completed, that would take you beyond the date when the clocks go back and could severely curtail future flying opporti-unities between now and the end of the year, which is a shame.

Hi Simon,

The only thing I have going for me at the moment is patience. Even though my progress has been slow and things have dragged on a bit, I am still mad keen to keep it all going ..... I'm in no rush.... I'll get there .... eventually. :classic_laugh:

I'm looking,ING forward to the new mancave as the space will hopefully allow me to have the odd project to attack as well as the storage space for my kit.

I think Christmas dinner this year will be consumed in the mancave with a beer and some peace and quiet. :classic_laugh:

Hi Leccy

I have wakened up to the fact and you are right ..... its disappointing as any progress made is bound to slip back again. However..... I will most definitely have a solid plan in place to achieve the A cert and get flying in earnest in 2025. My focus will be entirely on that.

No more major projects on the horizon for next year ..... my body couldn't handle it. :classic_laugh:

Remember my warning of beginners' burnout way back when you started on this rocky road? You've dodged that, so well done.

I think you've done marvellously well to stay the course, because many chaps who have had similar experiences to yourself would have become overwhelmed and chucked the towel in long ago. I've seen it several times hence my earlier comments.

Setting a track  towards your A is great but don't expect to stick to it like glue. Stuff happens to knock us all off course so keep things and expectations flexible. It's frustrating when you read about people (often kids without the usual distractions) doing their A within a few months of their first flight, but it's unrealistic to expect everyone to be the same with us all having different capabilities and resources, e.g. having easy access to regular  training, decent weather and work and family matters not  'getting in the way' too much.

If it means waiting until next year until you can get 'all your ducks in a row' so to speak, then carry on enjoying the journey, you'll get there in the end.

Good luck.

Thanks Cuban8,

It's been a journey for sure but mainly a good one. Yes, set backs but the overall enjoyment that I get from the hobby as a whole makes up for that.

Once I get flying consistently and independently, things will accelerate and the emphasis will be on making up for lost time, lifting some of the present restrictions and having a ball.

Here is to the rest of the journey.

I've not communicated with my mentor for a couple of weeks. I think he is aware of what I have taken on with the shed etc.

I still have a way to go so genuinely think that I will be into 2025 before I hit the air again. I suspect that anything learned , won't be quite lost, but rustier than before ...... if that's possible.

None the less ..... all part of themslow process to get me over the line. The off site activities ...... shed renewal etc being part of the journey have kept me going. Knowing that when the time comes round again .... I'm ready for another push at it.

Good luck to those that can already fly and .... fly through this winter when weather permits. I will look forward to following your fun and experiences with a nice form of envy.

  • 1 month later...

Had a call from my mentor today catching up with where we are. He knows that the fences and shed build have been eating into my time but just wanted to catch up.

I mentioned that it could be a few weeks before I can even think about a quick flight or two  but we will be keeping I touch to see that it happens. Once I get the shed build a bit more progressed and have some of my kit out of storage ..... it will be time to charge up the batteries and have my trainer quaking in its tyres. .... hopefully about 3 weeks or so away.

More as it happens.
