cymaz
.....Don’t panic. Gentle heating over the frame makes the fabric shrink. Adding coats of 50% shrinking dope will close the pores of the weave and make the fabric begin to shrink. A little more gentle heating will keep the shrink going. cymaz
I know to some I’ve missed some steps and methods with covering, it’s just a skip over for the refurb. The next few days the flaps and ailerons with be installed with Robert 1/8” pin hinges and push rods installed. Engine Doctor
Hope your painter uses a little plasticiser in the paint. 2k is good but can crack on flexible substrates unless plasticiser is used especially in vold weather. Just ouf of interest could you weigh the parts before and after painting ?
cymaz
Good idea about weighing 👍
cymaz
Inch by inch... The flap hinges are reinforced with brass tubes. IIRC 3.5mm ID. When using epoxy to fit in the pin hinges ..... don’t forget to work and heat the Vaseline into the knuckles
Peter Jenkins
I think the last time I used doped nylon was in 1968! I did have a control line combat wing called the Early Bird and that was my first nylon covering and that must have been in 1965. It added a great deal of strength to the EB and that was pretty strong to begin with.

I’ve never had a cowl on it as it has a DLE 30 up front. I’ve got an unused one somewhere.
cymaz
Finally got everything finished and ready for paint. I’ve got about 80’ of flap and no issues, is that sufficient?
cymaz
The wings and fuselage is still with Anthony being painted. I thought I’d make some of my fizzy can wheel hubs. Get a can! I find that Diet Coke ones are the best as the aluminum is very thin and pliable. Cut around the base at the paint line, don’t cut straight through as you nip off the base ! I made 50mm and 65mm ply formers. These are simple holes from scrap ply. I’m sure someone would be able to make perfectly round ones with a laser cutter. These are good enough Place the former over the can base , dome side up and carefully beat the hell out of it, using a flat hard surface Trim up and flatten with a hand wheel. I use an old wallpaper seamer. Fix to the hub with small screws Edited February 18 by cymaz
cymaz
I forgot to mention, before you cut out the ply hole, put marks 120* apart on the outside. This makes it easy to place the screws evenly around the hub

cymaz
Shaun, I’ve had then in a draw for years. I’ve no idea where they came from. They’re on a site somewhere!

Andy Stephenson
Photobucket made a change a while ago that meant if you didn't have an account, you weren't eligible to see the pictures in focus.

cymaz
I’ve finished the wheel hubs. The marvellous people at Stickers Planet have worked their magic again. The decal is 20mm x 24mm, probably the smallest they go

cymaz
Just collected it from paint not 30 mins ago.....a few decals to order. There is a small amount of flake in the clear coat, just enough to sparkle in the sun 😎 Edited March 10 by cymaz
