TheFlyingCrust
Following on from Avtur's "Reflective Mood" thread I thought it'd be interesting to find out what we all do in addition aeromodelling. I'm involved with the Transition Town group here in Dorset, I've been instrumental in setting up a Community Farm project, I run a local Food Co-operative, I'm involved in charitable fundraising with Moose International (which has become the victim of a changind society and may not survive). I'm a keen gardener, growing as many of my own veg as I can, and I do all my own house maintenance - except for gas appliances. And when I have time to spare I go out for long walks! All this on top of this wonderflul hobby. BTW I retired 3 years ago Ian Edited By Rentman on 27/01/2013 16:01:

Bob Cotsford
apart from working in IT support I watch motor racing - preferably on two wheels - and mess about with motorbikes. Spent this morning spraying a fuselage, then took my new to me Triumph Sprint out for a 50 mile check out ride.
Myron Beaumont
Most modellers seem to be involved a lot of the time with noisy things that go round and round powered by fuel to give them excitement . (except those lekky peeps of course ) Oh dear -Sorry-whoops !
Paul Marsh
I'm into High-end Hifi and Home Cinama systems. Probably costs more than rc planes (£5000 for the 9.1 Ex AV Processor alone), but you can't crash it!
kevin b
I mend bumped motor cars (well my business does. I'm getting too old). Apart from that I have the house / garden to finish off and an old kitcar to rebuild. Roll on retirement ! I do spend a lot of time when it is cold, dark and wet mainly, restoring old model plans. Simon B
I organise concerts for a living. You can see what I get up to here. I've used my expertise here to organise fundraisers for our local library hit by cuts too. I started modelling because I needed a hobby that wasn't also my job! Gordon Bushell
I do boat, yacht, and small ship wiring (it's a bit quiet at present!). All sorts of stuff from batteries and engines, to the communication and navigation gear. A long, long way from retirement, so I'll have to be more productive shortly. Otherwise I'm tied up with the local car club, autotesting, road rallying and the like. I've a few old car projects to sort out.

Dylan Reynolds LaserCraft Services
I'm a woodwork CNC programmer/operator and I work for the largest Dental Supplies company in the World, although where I actually work there is only 12 of us, and we build the actual surgeries (cabinets/worktops etc) Into F1, BTCC, I am a retired drummer of 25 years (through an accident at work ) and I married our guitarist 3 years ago in Miami, on t'beach. I also used to be a serious semi pro photographer, which is why we moved to the Lake Distict, Cumbria, since when I havn't picked up a camera lol. I love building, flying, music, going to gigs, attempting to design a scratch scale plane, computers etc etc and actually my job.
John Privett
Software development/support for the "day job", between 5 and 10 years to go before I can join the "mid-week flyers"! In the past I did a bit of small-bore target rifle and (before it was banned) pistol shooting, but haven't done that for several years now. I enjoy watching F1, though I haven't been to a race since they stopped using Brands Hatch - I saw all the F1 races that were held there in the 1980's - and did a bit of kart racing in my schooldays. I do all the routine (and most non-routine) maintenance on my car and my wife's, and now my daughters' cars too, whilst also teaching younger daughter to drive. I also enjoy photography, though mostly of the video variety in the last 20 years. I was a photographer on our university newspaper back in the late 70s which was interesting - I got to meet and photograph many top politicians of the day, plus the odd trade union leader and even a former Archbishop of Canterbury! I've just recently bought a digital SLR so hope to get some good use out of that. As club treasurer I'm kept busy in late December/early January dealing with all our membership renewals. With 195 so far for 2013 it's now getting quieter, and I'm even getting the occasional day with no renewals at all to deal with...
David Ashby - Moderator
195! that would have kept you busy John, I'm a treasurer too and 41 seemed more than enough. When I'm not flying and writing about flying or photographing models then I'll be cycling, walking, hill walking and long distance walking. I quite like walking. I like Myrons joke about medical grounds.... ha ha nice At the moment I'm building a VQ Mustang to follow the VQ Hurricane I did recently, I am finishing off restoration in my house in France which involves plumbing woodworking tiling,oh and I love cooking. I cook almost every day. I like languages, i speak English, Dutch, and now reasonable French. I used to do a bit of drawing and still ocasionally like to draw the birds that come in our garden. I also built and electric childs jeep and then went on to design and build an electric Fab one. There is so many things that I want to build, and not just planes, batmobile for example is on my to build list. Oh and I make all the stuff for my models, stands flight box (with wheels drawers etc) I'm sure ther is more, Oh did I mention restoring old corgi toys..........I never have enough time and with reitrement a few years away......Got to go, I'm busy........ Martyn K
I am a Naturalist, specialise (for want of a better word) in Lepidoptera (mainly Moths). I am Membership Secretary of our Wildlife/Recording group (Cheshire Active Naturalists) I am also an Amateur Radio Astronomer (and Optical astronomer as well), I make daily observations of the Sun and the impact that Solar storms have on the earths magnetosphere. I also do a lot of touring in our Motorhome, however so far, this doesn't mix well with aeromodelling. When I am at work I design and implement computer systems for a living (not as exciting as it sounds) but it pays for my hobbies. Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
I too am a club treasurer so I can sympathese with John, but like David we only have about 60 members - so its enough but not such a big problem. I'm fond of music (all sorts as long as its good - I'm a firm believer in the saying "there is only two types of music, good music and bad music"!) I listen to a lot and I also play bass guitar in a very informal rock/blues band. We gig occassionaly (3-4 times a year) but it mainly just for our own pleasure. I'm a Dad of two late teenage kids and that takes a lot of time (as i'm sure many others can testify) and I'm quite active with my local church. Add in the day job, which can be pretty demanding, and life's quite busy! BEB
Alan Randall
I am a communion steward at my local church, and in the past have been a church steward. I read a lot (too much, my wife would say), I garden (no alternative, I have a large garden) I sometimes help out with the local drama group, I do a bit of photography in conection with my other interests. I too am the treasurer of the model club I belong to.
Reno Racer
Between work (Senior Chartered Engineer) and a 2 1/2 year old, I have little enough time for model flying let alone anything else. When it was just the pair of us, i used to be a full size glider pilot, free fall parachutist, mountain climber and nitrox dive leader - In fact anything adventurous. Nowadays, all the kit just lives in the loft waiting for my mid-life crisis (again). Until about 4 years ago, I also used to restore classic cars, but again lack of time (and growing dislike of laying on the cold floor scraping my hands on that siezed bolt), has put and end to that for the forseeable future. Roll on retirement (still 17 years away)
