Capt Kremen
Can any of our chemical experts among us explain what magic ingredient(s) go into expensive 'Super Glues'? I have recently been using a pound-shop variety, 3 bottles in a pack for £1 !) with equal satisfactory results. Are we just paying for a name or are there real advantages in using the expensive stuff? What does a £6 or £8 pound 'model company' bottle do that the £1 DIY (same size) one, doesn't? J V R
CK I've only ever used pound shop CA glue and it used to be 4 bottles in a pack and only 1 bottle was no good out of the dozens that I have bought.......... leccyflyer
I've yet to find an odourless or foam-safe CA at the poundshop type retailers. Do these exist? If so that would be great.
kc
I find the very tiny tubes- 8 or 10 to a pack- from the pound shop to be very good. Open a fresh tube for each job.
Andy Stephenson
Capt K, I was told that the difference between expensive cyno and the cheap stuff is how many times it's distilled. This determines its shelf life as the more contaminants that can be removed the lower the chance of it beginning to set in the bottle. I keep mine in the fridge to ensure a long shelf life. A. Andy Stephenson
Leccy, I have found low viscosity cyno in the local pound shop but it disappeared after not too long, so the likelihood of finding something as specialist as odourless cyno in a pound shop is low to none. Bob Cotsford
I find the pound shop variety to be excellent for furry hinges and for hardening vulnerable areas or tapped threads but it don't half stink. Zap and the like seem to use much less obnoxious solvents in them.

GrumpyGnome
I find that the more expensive branded versions work better in the winter than the cheap 'ebay specials', which seem to take an age to set ......... GG
John Wagg
Is there not a difference in the setting times of the various makes. ? I have used Poundland and it works fine. I am also using Zap-a-Gap "medium" on the premise that it takes a few seconds to go off so making allowance for my fumbling fingers.
Engine Doctor
The Poundland super glue is fine but just not as thin as the more expensive zap cyano for use on light weight structures. I always try to keep a pack in the glue box as a reserve. That way if it gets left for too long and goes off its no big deal. Its also ok for thinning the thick cyano when it gets too thick. I have bought some other brand cyano from LMS that was very thin soaked / wicked in very well but didn't stick ! That went straight in the bin. If Poundland glue works for you , use it .
