r6dan
What’s decent iron on film but not absurdly expensive?

If you prefer ProFilm then better get a mortgage first 😉.
GrumpyGnome
All the 'branded' films are ridiculously priced - 1M of Oracover cost twice as much as a 10M roll of generic film off t'net.
Outrunner
Solarfilm still available direct from their website
GrumpyGnome
Yeah? Last time I visited the site, they only had a very limited range of colours...... Just visited and loads of colours. Yippee! Don Fry
I’ve always reckoned Profilm and HobbyKing is the same plastic. It tacks at the same temperature, shrinks at the same temperature, melts at the salme temperature, and shrinks by the same amounts.
Tim Donald
I've started using MacGregor covering film which I think is the same as the Hobbyking stuff. It's pretty good - not as good as Oralight but about a third of the price.

Andy Stephenson
50 minutes ago, GrumpyGnome said: Maybe. Does Profilm leave a visible white glue line on overlaps? The answer is no because unlike HK film Profilm uses a transparent adhesive.
Don Fry
Didn’t say the same GG, just the same plastic, and therefore when glued and shrunk, looks the same. White overlap, invest in some acetone, then there are no white glue lines after a wipe.
GrumpyGnome
Obviously transparent adhesive is expensive 🙂 Yeah, I use acetone on overlaps.
Keith Billinge
I used to use the HobbyKing stuff; but now the postage is so expensive, the stuff from 4-max is the same quality, but not so crazy expensive. Approx £20-£25 for 5metres. You're welcome KB
Ace
Personally I like the HK/4 Max/Rapid RC film which are Polyester so almost burn proof like Oracover. However they only have one layer with colour and glue so can leave some colour behind if not careful if removed without heat. Oracover traps the colour between two layers then the glue so removes cleanly - I believe that is the difference for a price.
Nigel R
RapidRC get my vote for covering film.
David Holland 2
Does anyone share my enthusiasm for Ripmax AeroFilm? I have covered my last three builds with it and am currently covering a DB Tiger Moth in silver (the immediate post-war RAF trainer silver/yellow scheme). It is relatively cheap, very opaque, sticks like you know what to a blanket, no backing film to wrestle with, goes round compound curves really well and shrinks like a good 'un. I would have preferred Solartex but........... David
Engine Doctor
I cant remeber the name of it but a short while ago there was some so called "seconds" possibly from perkins ? It was awful stuff. Dont be tempted to buy it if you see it offered just slightly cheaper than proper covering. Rapid RC covering is excellent .
colin wray 2
It was easy cote seconds as you say it was utter rubbish
Outrunner
I had a roll of Easycote seconds in silver and had no problem with it. The only film I have problems with is Oracover as is costs an arm and a leg.
Andy Stephenson
The Easycote 2nds in red that I tried to use is very thin and translucent. It doesn't cover the black lines of a laser cut structure and I found it stays sticky after cooling. I am, by contrast, refurbishing a model with 4Max covering which goes on extremely well at low temperature and shrinks very nicely. Because of the low temperature characteristic, it doesn't go mat when rubbed over with the iron. It's also much cheaper than Profilm and at least as good. So goodbye Profilm with your arm and a leg pricing, it was good whilst it lasted.
