Tony j
Hi all Hoping you maybe able to help. I have an acro wot low wing fitted with a 46 size two stroke. I bought this engine from new and has not had much use though is probably 12 months or more in age. The issue I am having is the model is relative fast, so once in the air I tend to throttle back to a more comfortable speed for me. this is fine for a while then it just deadsticks. it seems to transition fine on the ground from idle to full, if I leave it on idle it will eventually die unless I put some revs into it. any thoughts or suggestions welcome thank you all Regards Tony J
Jon H
The engine tuning probably needs adjustment but if the model is too fast change the prop to something with less pitch. 11x6 is common for a 46, but if its too fast try 12x5 instead. You can then run the engine at a higher throttle setting without it racing away.
Tony j
Hi Jon Yes I have had a couple of different people adjust it but it still seems troublesome, and I am interested in what you have said about the prop . It is currently fitted with a 11x6 prop which as you say is what I generally fit to my 46 size engine so I will give a 12x5 a go and see what happens. Many thanks
Paul De Tourtoulon
I had an Irvine .53, the chrome disappeared around the exhaust, a common problem that some OS engines suffered with, I hope this isn't your problem. GaryW
Try changing the glow plug.... i had a similar issue with an engine recently & all it need to rectify was a new/different glow plug Edited August 1 by GaryW
Martin Harris - Moderator
How’s the cooling? Do you have an adequate exit route that allow/guide air around the cylinder and head? Overheating fits your description of it running well initially. Otherwise, check plumbing for problems as the fuel level drops - e.g. pinhole in the tubing. It’s as well to blank off the “unused” cowl cheek entry if you haven’t already done so.
Tony j
HI all Paul I hope thats not the case but will take a look. Gary This was suggested at the club which I duly did swap for a new one but not for a different type so there maybe scope in that Thankyou Martin Cooling, I hope will be good, as I am flying it without the cowl due to the trouble, it just make it eaiser to mess with. thanks for the other ideas as well Thanks to all for the replies lots to go at there. I will let you know how it all goes but maybe some time, as I have some repairing to do from the last flight Edited August 1 by Tony j
Andy Stephenson
There a lot of fake OS No8 glow plugs out there which may be your trouble as they really don't perform like the real thing. See below...
Nigel R
TBH it sounds like it is not tuned. Get the top end peaked, don't run it slobbering rich, then turn attention to the idle needle. Look to check it with at least 30s of idle followed by a quick clean transition to full throttle. As others have noted, glow plug and fuel system (pinholes, debris) can all create similar effects. What manufacturer / engine? Not all carbs are created equal. Sometimes a "perfect" tune is not obtainable and a compromise must be made. It's worrying when the genuine article looks more shonky than the fake! 😄 (Though NB that the threads and centre connector do look better formed)

"........ 41°c here, so it's the heat that got to me, normal service will be resumed soon. A look at my field box has given me hope that all has returned to normal, Enya 3, OS F plugs, blue fuel, electric starter, oily rags and a pool of castor oil under the fuel pump.😇
David Davis
I was having the same problem with my OS 46AX installed in the club's Seagull Boomerang trainer which uses a two pipe fuel feed system. I got it on the bench and yes, yopu've guessed it...
