Laser 75 Rebuild

Hi All

Having partly rebuilt my 1990s Laser 75 I put it away for finishing.

Now I've come to use it I find spares are now tricky.

I particularly need

Valve push rods; Cylinder head screws; backplate gasket; clips or attachment fixings for the exhaust and carb

Can anyone advise where to get these? Seems a shame to ditch it now! I've put new bearings etc.

I'd like it for my restored Falcon.

Thanks for any help

Hi edge flyer. Sounds like a relatively  simple fix. Whats the problem with the pushrods  its unlikely that they wear or have you lost them ? Any screws should be comercially available and its simple to make a gasket. Exhaust clips might be an issue but I thought the 75 exhuast was held in be grub screws ?  Dont dump it you can do it  and good luck.

Those older Lasers used BA screws, not metric.

Assuming the silencer and carb. tapped threads are in good condition, you’ll need 2BA or 4BA grubscrews (I can’t remember which but I think 2BA).

The same goes for the cylinder head bolts. You’ll need to measure the length required. Allen-key capped bolts.

Modelfixings should have them.

I don’t recall gaskets being fitted, I thought they just relied on the fine finish of the mating faces, possibly aided by the thinnest smear of silicone.

New pushrods are available, loads were left over. Head screws dont need changing unless lost or rounded. Never had a backplate gasket, just a thin smear of silicone sealant. 75's didnt have carb/exhaust clips except the very last few, are you sure its a 75? In any case carb clips were in plentiful supply when i left so there should be loads available

Oh thanks Jon. I'm going on what you told me way back! "Laser 75 from the 90s". But I may be remembering wrongly as I also had a 70. I sold one and kept the other to service. It does have grub screws for the carb and exhaust I've now found.

Picture of the parts I have...

Where would I order the push rods from? The Laser company is still functioning is it?

The problem with the backplate and head screws is simply I've stupidly lost them. I don't know what thread they are?

That is a 75 for sure. Pushrods and tubes for an 80 will fit, you will have to ask model shop leeds to chase those up.

Screws are 4ba all round. cant remember the lengths off the top of my head. O rings are BS008 if my memory serves me.

My understanding is that Laser Engines (Geoff) has spare parts, but has not sent them to Leeds Model Shop. Once they receive the parts they will then sell them on to us.

I don't really want to nag, but our only route is to keep phoning and emailing Leeds Model Shop asking for spare parts and in turn they might be able to convince Geoff to send them the parts to sell to us.

Yes that fits what Leeds said and I know they are highly regarded. As my Laser has been in bits for 5 years plus Im sure it will wait.

Probably flawed logic from my point of view, but if everyone sits and does nothing, won't Geoff think that no one wants spares and won't send Leeds the spares.

If we all let Leeds know we want to buy spare parts, they will let Geoff know. The more of us who ask, the more likely the parts will turn up sooner rather than later.

Geoff has got boxes of bits and pieces left over… Jon showed a couple of photos of some of them last year.

What else is he going to do with them? He’s not going to sell them to modellers himself. So why hasn’t he already sent them to Leeds?

Perhaps a difference in what Geoff wants for them and what Leeds will pay for them.

Leeds’ stock does get replenished occasionally as they do have more parts available now than they did previously.

There is no harm is asking Leeds though, as Chris suggests.

Sorry but I have no longer got any faith in Geoff! He promised that lots of parts were going to be delivered to MSL in July / August last year. He promised that more engines were going to be made available through MSL. And on a personal note he’s had 2 of my 200 in-line twins for repairs since last September!

As usual I found all the lost parts when looking for something else. They were put away safely and labelled.

Oh do I know about that! I am furiously looking for multiple things in the hope I will find one of them! If putting things away safely were an Olympic sport I would be a gold medalist! 😳🤔🤭😂

Getting on well but 2 problems I hope someone will help with.

Firstly setting the timing. The marks on the 2 cams presumably point to the central pinion but at what point piston top bottom or where?

Secondly one valve opens and springs shut nice and crisply. The other is stiff. I've lubricated the stem. Do I need to take it apart again and work on the stem? I seem to remember that assembling the springs and retainer clips was awkward waiting for bits to fly apart.
