Paul Marsh
Aircraft with thumbs, helis with thumb/forfinger. Mostly fly fixed wing, so chose thumbs.

Bob Cotsford
Thumbs only, but I do find it increasingly difficult to make my thumbs track straight either up/down or side to side. Wear and tear in the joints I suppose. Whatever happened to adjustable rotating gimbals(another thread perhaps?)
Peter Miller
I always have flown thumbs only. I used to have a friend who flew my models for the camera. He always complained that they were too sensitive on the controls. He flew fingers and thumbs One day I told him to fly my models on thumbs only. He found that they were much easier to fly that way. Paul Marsh
I once flew Stuart Mackay's large Robin, using his TX. It's mode 2, but with really long sticks (3 inches long), so had to use fingers and thumbs. Was ok, flew the model ok, just got some getting used to. Doug Ireland
Thumbs for stooging around, forefingers and thumbs for the tricky bits!
J Myers III
Thumbs! I joke...I use my toes
Wrongway
A sort of mix between the two. Thumb on top and forefinger around the back. It's a sort of compromise as I started thumbs only but started helicopters and was advised to use finger and thumb there. I couldnt get used to it but found the compromise the most comfortable. Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator
Now, that's interesting "Wrongway". You see if you'd have asked me I'd have said "finger and thumb" - and indeed that's what I voted. But if I stop to really think about it I do what you do, My thumb is actually on top with my forfinger sort of "wrapped around" the front of the stick! Are we just weird? Or is this "other" BEB
Ian Jones
Thumbs. I tried to convert after being told a pencil grip is the only "right" way - I couldn't get fine enough control like that, so it's thumbs only for me. That experince has led me to teach new pilots to use whichever suits them best.
Alan Cantwell
thumbs, way i was taught, and the way i tech others, much more control this way and i have flown with the best pilots, they use thumbs too
John Privett
Finger and thumbs for me. I switched many years ago after starting with thumbs. It took a week or two to get used to and I "think" it gives easier control - but I'm far from convinced, so "each to their own" I say! fly boy3
Thumbs only on top of sticks, exept when flying inverted, then I place thumb behind elevator stick so as to prevent wrong input, and diving down. Cheers. Edited By fly boy3 on 09/04/2012 11:29:
Dave Bran
The experience at the School Club I run might be of interest..............11yr old upwards. Initially its hard to get kids to put their thumbs on top, they tend to put the thumb behind the stick, particularly the LH throttle stick, making controlled negative movement just a trifle more difficult!!. This is mainly because the sticks are far too long for 11 year olds, even when adjusted (where the Tx allows) to the shortest. For some of the tinier kids I have resorted to taking the tops off completely, and using a bit of fuel tube to widen the end.. We want kids to enter and enjoy the sport/hobby, yet manufacturers do little or nothing to help them do so!!! BTW, even with cars, most kids seem to prefer sticks to wheel. Alan Cantwell
the thumb under the stick when inverted is WELL worth remembering
Tim Hooper
Mode 2 with a neckstrap. Thumb/finger on right hand for finesse. Thumb only on left stick for no apparent reason..... tim
Keith Simmons
I would use thumb only, but was taught to use finger & thumb for more "control"
Rusty C
I have been told to many time be instructor to get my finger in on the action! But I always slip back to thumbs just feels more (normal) to me Horses for courses I guess Rusty
Eck
Thumbs for me, with occasional use of teeth if the engine stutters while carrying model plus tx to the flightline!
