john stones 1 - Moderator
Was going to the field today but weathers awful have some work done on the cockpit, means i'll soon be doing the stringers First I skinned F5 with 1/64 ply, then set about sheeting the cockpit frame, kept it pinned down to keep it flat, pretty happy with that, when dry i'll use a card template to do the cut out. Masher
Nice work John, gives great access to your tank and tubes
john stones 1 - Moderator
Cheers Masher Cut out looks a bit long to me ? when the windscreen/instrument panel go's in maybe it'll look better. Weighed it, seems o.k to me and it stayed nice and flat, I enjoyed that bit John
Gary Manuel
Looking very nice John - soon be ready to maiden. Gizzago.
john stones 1 - Moderator
Aye I might finish one yet Gary, you can have a go once you've got grass cut John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Not a lot done, I managed one half of the stringers, I found it a bit tricky but it's well worth the effort, spacings aren't equal but I can live with it. Chris Barlow
That's a nice big hatch to get batteries in and out. Looks ideal!
Peter Miller
If you want a simple, easy to remove cowl look at my Aviate 110 build I use keyhole slots and rund head screws. just push on and slide, then one screw to stop it rising, or falling and it is secure
McG 6969
Hi John, Your hatch really looks great. Very nice building method. And I guess that 'large' cut-out is really needed to accommodate your 'Russian bride'... Steven S
I mounted the cowl for my volksplane with rare earth magnets. Works quite well.

john stones 1 - Moderator
Cheers Ben all done now and back on to stuff I enjoy, fitting waggly/flappy bits John
Simon Feather
Nice job John - your hatch is pretty much exactly how I'd planned to do mine, including the rake on F5. Can't quite see how you've engaged it into the firewall - I'll probably key it in with a c/f peg or a bit of dowl. Currently debatlng latching mechanisms (I have a few potential designs floating around in my head) and weighing up whether to go with a hidden latch or to see if magnets will hold it firm enough. I've got lots of Neodymium magnets, we'll see when I get to that bit. Simon
john stones 1 - Moderator
Plan is a dowel up front and I'm thinking I can make a sprung loaded catch to mimic a joystick Simon, I don't like magnets that calls for accurate measuring and fitting so that's me snookered Mate of mine had an ARTF and one of the magnets dropped out, he super glued it back in and had a cuppa whilst it dried, when he tried to fit canopy to fly it kept jumping back off, Numpty John
john stones 1 - Moderator
Stringers done and sanded up, just want a tickle with fine paper before covering. John
Simon Feather
numpty indeed! I'm certainly favouring the catch. Enough chit chat, got some building to do!
john stones 1 - Moderator
Started on the hinging, ailerons first, I use Kavan leaf/pin hinges on this sort of model, and 30 min epoxy to glue them. Bit of balsa added to wing t/e first (poor picture) then cut through centre line for 2 hinges, then I pin the aileron in place and mark through the slot for aileron...easy bit of balsa added to l/e of aileron as well. john stones 1 - Moderator
Chamfer the aileron, how much ? as little as is needed for full movement, draw a guide line then take some off, I keep trying it till I'm happy, then I rebate the hinge in a little to keep the gap small.
