Winter is here....who's been flying?

Recommended Posts

Good turnout today - 10 members with at least a couple of models each, so lots of variety on a 100% overcast day, just above freezing, with some residual snow on the hills. The light rain arrived bang on cue as forecast at 2pm, bringing a close to proceedings. Did a bit of single channel flying, as well as flying half a dozen of my usual models - keeping the lipos in a cool bag equipped with a hot water bottle is keeping them at a nice ten degrees plus.

Finished off the Tom Stanton 3d hover craft.

Worked quite well, the skirt isn't fully inflating so may need to use something lighter?

Watch your altitude there. You don't want any near misses with low flying aircraft 😁

Not a bad day up in the North East,  wind a little blustery but the Warbirds FW190 and the Brian taylor Corsair managed very well had a  4 hour session 9 turned up. The Corsair on one flight with a new 5s 5000 flew just over 9 minutes and had 49% left. Most flights were around 7 mins with over 50% left in the battery.

The photos were from a camera video

Lovely morning here in Perthshire and managed to get out for a brief session and a handful of flights with my PZ Messerschmitt Bf109G and wee Spittie dogfighter. Field very wet underfoot, but only a light wind and feeling quite warm at 10 degrees. Great fun flying the Gustav in formation with my pal Bob's Buchon 109, all depron, based on the Cambrian 109 funfighter.

On my trip to the field the sun was shining, but it didn't last long. By the time I got there it was distinctly DULL. The silver lining was that the wind was 4-5mph mostly down the strip. Just the type of day to give a run out to my SkyWing 74" Edge. When I referred to my previous notes I was surprised find it was over 4 months since she last had an outing. Just 2 hours of flying on the clock.

I had forgotten how precisely she flies and holds the track very well.  Anyway gave her a good work out and came away satisfied with the tidiness of the aeros. Note to self - must fly her more often ! 😀

13.5 degrees, gentle breeze, sunshine, on NE coast. Just stopped flying. Summer's coming....

Put a few extra flights on tye Double Trouble (really is the perfect 'chuck in the back of the car' model).

Got the Evo running nicely in the Wot4.... decided not to fly it with a servo arm securing screw missing though! The Evo will stay there until I sort the recalcitrant RCGF...

Nice afternoon.

(No pictures 'cos everyone knows what these models look like).

Warm and sunny with scattered high cloud and a 5-7mph crosswind, just four of us at a very wet club field, but a grand morning flying.  I brought my Hawes Tucano out for a rare outing, but with the crosswind and longish grass there just wasn't the oomph to get off the ground before running out of runway, so I let discretion be the better form of valour and put her back in the car for another day. Everything else was fine though and got eight flights in with five different models for a nice session - haven't flown my Balsacraft Bearcat for a couple of years, so was delighted to give that an airing.

My first brushless motor was an Axi 28/20 in a Hawes Tucano. Lovely flying plane.....

My first brushless was a 2820/10 from John Emms at Puffin Models and it was a revelation in my Cambrian Bf109E conversion. Both the Tucano and Bearcat have some of my first AXI 2820/10 motors which are brilliant, but something isn't quite right with the Tucano - not something that I was going to waste time on at the field. I'll get the wattsmeter on tomorrow and see what's up. It could even be that the undercarriage isn't running freely enough.

Tucano tests this morning show there's nothing intrinsically wrong with either the undercart or the power train, apart from the fact that the 10 year old lipo packs are sagging a little more under full load than I'd ideally like. Still at around 100w/lb which should be okay. I've swapped out the 9x6" prop for a 10x5" prop for a slightly better acceleration on take off for not much additional current draw. Will try that next time out and see if it is just the slightly long grass and boggy strip. My tail draggers are getting off okay though.

Few piccies from yesterday's session, courtest of clubmate Steve - thanks Steve.

My Balsacraft Bearcat had her maiden flight in 2001, with a brushed buggy motor and 8 cell sub-C nicad pack. Many flights on and the last time that she flew was in 2021, so it was nice to put the Bearcat in the air for a sortie.

I've had a bit of a curate's egg of a day.

Took the dog for a walk across the fields and she set up three deer. She chased after them at maximum speed but they were too fast for her.

Then the postman arrived when I was in the shower. He was delivering the vinyl for the Barons which I had ordered from Pyramid Models. I had to pay an extra 11€. Thanks brexit!

I had arranged for my protegé Frans to pick me up at 10.00 before we went to the flying field to fly his Radio Queen. He's at the stage of doing his own take offs and landings but he's a bit brutal on the controls and tends to hold in a signal for too long. He managed two successful take offs and one landing though the take offs were not straight down the runway. On the third take-off he froze on the controls and the model smashed into a small metal hut which we use to store outside chairs. I did not have the time to regain control at that altitude. The model is repairable but it was a good job that we were the only people there, because this is where non-flying pilots tend to sit and watch the rest of us making fools of ourselves. Maybe he'd be better off with a four-channel model and/or a different instructor.

We retired to my house for coffee and opened the parcel from Pyramid Models. Thank you Lee, they look very fine indeed.

I had intended to spend the afternoon doing domestic chores but the weather was perfect so I took my Ukrainian Baron for a couple of practise flights. Besides, the forecast is for wind and rain in the days ahead, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it! The first flight was a familiarisation excercise but on the second flight I practised flying left hand circuits at low level. The plan was to fly ten circuits then land. I had completed nine circuits and had just lined the model up for a low pass when the engine cut. I landed it unseen in dead ground but heard the model rolling along the ground so didn't think that the model would have been damaged. This proved to be the case. This is going to be one lucky model! However, the 90cc (3 oz) fuel tank is too small for the Thunder Tiger 54! I'll sort out a bigger one.

After cleaning and packing the model, I took the dog for a walk around the perimeter. We saw a large flock of the Common European Crane flying northwards  to their summer breeding grounds in Sandanavia and Northern Russia. This flock was followed by three more and once we'd got home another flock flew over the house.

Picture of the Radio Queen and the Ukrainian Baron minus its national markings below. The Dayglo Yellow really stands out well.

Perfect day today, sunny, warm, <2mph wind, really good turnout of members and lots of different models on show. Had a bot of a Spitfire day myself and flew six different Spitfires = though my Seafire broke the only prop I had for it on the take off run, so didn't actually make it into the air. Really pleased with the maiden and subsequent flights of my winter fix up Balsacraft Spitfire PRXIX, which was every bit as nice to fly as expected. Clubmate Jim flew his gorgeous Veron Hawker Tomtit and Rainer got a few flights in with his Bugatti Racer - lots of other highlights and the best flying day so far this year.

Yup, absolutely best day by far, this year.

At the field 10:00 to 15:00, still too muddy to park on - or mow! Warm, sunny, gentle breeze straight down a runway. Surprisingly just 4 fliers all day.

Kev flew his lovely yellow Seagull Chippy. No issues with muffler, pilot figure, fuel lines this time, and his baby 3s LiPo made the lights (well, one of them!) much brighter. There's talk on t'internet of fitting a 30cc petrol engine, but I have to say that a DLE20 is a perfect match. He lso flew his old school ic Raptor, building up courage to loop it.....

Phil flew his EFlite T28, which coped nicely with the soggy mossy runway. And got a complete flight from his little Arrows Viper - a stepping stone to something like a Habu. I could hear his heart thumping from a good 10 yards away. I think he now believes me telling him it's a real pussycat.

Duncan brought his go-to winter hack - a Wot4XL with 35ccs of petrol power, and oversized wheels. Apart from that little mini-Wot, they all seem to fly really nicely.

I flew my Double Trouble - the plane I always take. It needs a new glow plug but still makes me smile every time I fly it. I'm pretty sure I've recommended it, and an OS 46 before. A few dozen times. Also flew my Wot4 with Evo 10cc 'borrowed' from my P51. Enjoyment only spoilt by the plug cap coming loose three times..... grrrr.

No pics. We have vids but I'd need to bleep out the expletives 🙂

A grand day out.

I didn't think the rain in the last few days was enough to cause further flooding but the ground here in the Trent Valley has been saturated so much during these winter months that our flying field was again under several inches of water. Our starting benches floated off to one edge of the field a few weeks ago and are now inaccessible without a boat(!), and the storms a couple of weeks ago ripped the covering off the work benches.

Despite all that, I again took advantage of the good weather today to get the waterplanes out for a great day's flying.
