Dad_flyer
I am doing two models with dope finish, and I am going to run out of thinners. Does anyone know somewhere I can get more whilst all the shops are shut?
Gary Clark 1
I ordered my previous lot from Ebay. Gary
Martin Harris - Moderator
I've got a gallon arriving tomorrow from an Ebay seller if the Royal Mail do their bit. They appear to be happy to deliver it...
Mike T
I've never had a problem with 'gunwash' thinners, but the chemical contents do seem to be variable! I recently ordered thinners from these: Sprayguns Direct on the grounds that they will (hopefully) supply a product compatible with airbrush/spraygun use! Dad_flyer
Thank you for the suggestions. I had seen some on Ebay, but I was wanting to use something less virtual. I shall have a look at the spray guns site.
paul d
I use Halfords, it's click and collect only at the moment but saves waiting on the postman and you can normally collect your goods within a hour.
Scott Edwards 2
I get a 5 liter can from a paint manufacturer in Brighton. Works out a fraction of the price of the small Halfordsc cans and lasts for years.
Andy J
I also need more thinners, so is there any difference to what Sprayguns Direct call Top Coat Thinners to what I can get from flea---bay which is called Tetrosyl Standard Thinners? Denis Watkins
Andy, have a rethink and post the spray job that you have in mind. The thinner is to match your paint, and not the spray equipment. In our case, we usually choose Enamel or cellulose thinners. Then good Acrylic thinner for Acrylic paints
Andy J
Well don't have a specific job for the thinners Denis, tend to use it as a brush cleaner and de-greaser.
Martin McIntosh
I recently got 5lt of Tetrosyl for £13.95 delivered next day from ebay. Same as I normally use. Anyone who buys it from Halfrauds must be nuts.

Dad_flyer
Is that why they often say 'non blooming' for paint thinners to distinguish from cleaning solvent with impurities?
Denis Watkins
Most of the problems with hobby spraying are air temperature and humidity. Professionals control this in a Spray booth, but our best hobby spray jobs are done on a dry day above 15°C And then we choose the right thinners for our paint. Stuart C
Nail varnish remover worked well for me when I was once unable to source proper thinners.

Engine Doctor
Posted by Doc Marten on 28/04/2020 21:21:29: Standard thinners and gun wash is fine for cleaning and degreasing, it's variable quality, usually low quality, reclaimed cellulose, the decent stuff is around £20 per gallon from specialist auto paint stores. Edited By Doc Marten on 28/04/2020 21:23:54 Agree with above . Standard Thinners used to be a decent reclaimed thinners and could be used for priming. first coats etc . lately its rubbish , full of rusty water and only useful for washing and de-greasing bits. Even tetrosyl has gone down in quality . Buy the decent top coat thinners to be on the safe side . If you want old fashioned pear drop smelling thinners then Axminster tools sell it . It brand is "Chestnut " more expensive but doesnt have the nasty Toluene and Xylene that car paint thinners has

Andy Stephenson
I recently bought online a 5l can of cellulose thinners expecting it to be the sweet smelling stuff but when it arrived, what I got was something that smelled like rotten garlic. It works how it should but the smell lingers, so not so good for an indoor workshop. Can anyone confirm that the thinners they bought recently is the good old sweet stuff. I'm looking for good quality top cote thinners. A.

Andy Stephenson
That's the smell, but strictly speaking it would be pure Amyl Acetate. A.
Martin Harris - Moderator
Sorry, I was using mine (Tetrosyl gun cleaner) today but couldn't smell it through my mask! This is a good thing though as exposure to thinners seems to make me queasy for a while and I always use an activated charcoal mask. If I get an accidental whiff of it later I'll update you. Martin Harris - Moderator
Well, my spraygun pot smelt of normal thinners when I checked it - no hint of garlic!
