Bob Cotsford
It's excellent for cleaning matt finish plastic motorcycle panels. It doesn't keep rust at bay as well as ACF50 which is actually designed to resist corrosion. It's not as good as a penetrating oil as - dedicated penetrating oils! Pete Collins
Oddly enough, according to an old lady i know, it DOES cure arthritis! Or, at least, she sprays it on her knee and insists that it helps her mobility. Perhaps someone should conduct some proper scientific tests? john stones 1 - Moderator
It sorts the locks on my sheds in Winter, and degreases stuff, I accepted the Fish Oil one, that's not true then ?

Someone I used to sail with claimed exactly the same thing.
J D 8
I have heard it is very good for shining leaves on plastic plants and if you spray the base of your tree's it will keep the beaver's from chewing them.
Piers Bowlan
Be careful if spraying it on control surface linkages, not that one would normally, as it makes solarfilm sag and wrinkle. I don't know if it has that effect on all film but you don't want to find out the hard way!
Phil Green
Any serious Jimi Hendrix fans will know of the British band, the Hamsters a fantastic live band, sadly retired. Throughout a gig their guitarist Slim would spray WD40 down the length of his guitar neck every three or four numbers. Didnt wipe it off, he just played it 'wet'

Andy Stephenson
WD40, I use it all the time especially to remove Evostick and similar sticky contact adhesives. Good as a lubricant when drilling and tapping hard aluminium alloy. A.

Andy Ellis 1
Whilst WD40 smells lovely, GT85 smells lovelier. But does work as well.

paul d
Good thread Doc, for the life of me I can't remember where Brian said about not using it on phosphoru bronze, sadly a bit late to ask him now, what magazine did write under the name of "the wizard of oz"? At the time it made sense to me to the point of never using it on bronze, oilte etc. I only ever use it to silence squeaky door hinges although I do agree about the smell. Tosh McCaber
Hmm- Read on YouTube that it removes bird poop from your car. Sprayed it on, waited a few minutes, rubbed it off. Result- bird poop still there, but nice and shiny!
Ronaldo
Good for squeaky hinges {stopping the squeak that is} Frees locks, I squirt some on the key then work it into the lock. Freeing rusted nuts on bolts. Also very good as lubricant when drilling and tapping metal.

Bob Cotsford
Doc, I used to blast everything under the fairings which areas are traditionally prone to oxidation. Especially useful on Aprilia wiring! When maintenance was needed everything came apart much more easily. It was very effective for winter protection of alloy frames too as I used to ride throughout the year in days gone by.

dave windymiller
Re the bird muck thing, my understanding is when you wash away the muck and find the paint surface has been damaged by it, wd40 is used to soften the paint allowing it to polish easier and quicker (using t-cut or similar). I know wasps in jars dont like it from the "experiments" we did as kids! They'd rather sting themselves to death!
Geoff S
I used to spray it on the magneto of my motorcycles when they wouldn't start after standing out in the rain. I think WD stand for Water Displacement. Geoff
