New site?  No video preview thumbnail.  No chance to preview the post?

OK so posting YouTube vids is easier, but at least there was a preview before.

Definitely NOT an improvement.

Bonzo

I thought the same as you initially, but then I realised that it isn't needed because what you are typing becomes a preview in REAL TIME. A big improvement!

Yep ... definitely not doing it for me on an iPad.  Not good.  Feels 'too busy'.  Attached is an example of old tech Barton CL site.  Not in your face and you can see most of it in one screen.

lol ... new site feels too 'millennial' to me!

A 1990's style forum front page with a minimal number of fora related to a very specialised area of aeromodelling is quite unlike the broader church of RCM&E which has a much larger number of fora, which means it would not be practical to see even all of the fora on a single page without scrolling.

Since by far the most popular means of viewing this site seems to be via the Latest Posts view, the appearance of the forum listing would seem to be of secondary importance.

Grey text - prefer black as grey is harder on the eyes.

Large ads - Someone has to pay for our forum so can live with them

Double spacing - waste of space most of the time

Virtually all pictures a minimum of 1/2 screen with some full - more to scroll through (someone reading a large build thread will sue for RSI)

10 screen scrolls to cover home page main topic menu (then more in each sub topic)- serious waste of space and tedious

Max 4 one line posts to a page - wasted space to scroll through

Possibly make the name, avatar, details smaller on the left, that would reduce the white frame size on a one liner increasing the number per page

Likes:

Summary removal - Good

Darker background- Good

No photo album required - do like that

Straight to last read - do like that

New look - like that (but not the wasted space)

Can't help feeling it's 2 steps forward and 1 1/2 backwards, it's just all that wasted space to continuously scroll through ???

Moan over

Just compared my PC view to smartphone & tablet. On the PC 1/3 of the 27" screen is wasted grey border, however that wasted area is not present on a smartphone or tablet. A 1/2 screen picture is also less in your face on a SM/T compared to on my PC and if the functionality is better then that's an improvement for them but can't help feeling it's not a win - win.

This is not a dislike, more of a suggestion.

It has been pointed out by many, that photo's take up a massive amount of screen space, which results in a lot of scrolling whilst reading threads.

Would it be possible, instead of seeing the photos at full size that they appear as smaller thumbnails, allowing text and thumbnail to be viewed at the same time? This is often quite handy when the text is explaining what's going on in the photo. Clicking on the photos could then reveal a full sized view.

I cannot help but think that this site has not been tested by any of the actual users, i.e. ordinary modellers. Tweaks such as making uploading pics much faster needed to be done but otherwise I had no problems with the old one other than that a thread search could have been much better. It clearly is still not so.

Other than the ability to search within post content?  Seems vastly more powerful to me!

Martin, as has been explained before, the old forum software had become unsupportable, no changes could be made and as time passed there was more and more chance of there being security issues.
We're now in the very fortunate position of having the vast majority of historical data preserved and a modern, maintainable forum. The alternative would probably have been a clean slate with no posts, pictures or registered members saved.

As for the search box, it's vastly superior, especially if you use the drop down to adjust search parameters as you wish.

I actually posted yesterday that I thought the search facility was really good. I had tried a few simple searches and all seemed good. I tried searching for a specific string I knew existed in an old post of mine. I typed in “Longest scarf” and it duly returned the correct post. I should have tested further , it was not finding the exact phrase, it just so happened that was the only post where longest and scarf occurred in the same post. I can not now work out if there exists some syntax that allows an exact phrase to be matched. It looks like quoting should do the job but it doesn’t.

Hopefully this can be elaborated on in due course.

Tim
