I'm buying a used mouldie glider from outside the UK, coming by courier in a box (the parts break down for transport).

Can I expect to be hit with custom or other import duties?  If so what are they based upon?

Depends on the value of the goods.

Usually 20% of the price you paid (including shipping)

The seller puts the purchase price on the customs declaration.

The shipping company / Post Office will then charge you a fee as well for processing the paperwork.

Tax evasion is illegal, so I am not able to comment on possible ways to reduce your costs. 😉

About ten minutes ago, A wee parcel of bolts arrived at my home in France from Modelfixings (an excellent company)
The bill was £23..

I had to pay around £10 to the postie, or my M3 capheads would have vanished, never to be seen again

If it is used/second hand are customs and import duties applicable?

Thats the price you pay for living in a peacful pleasant land , If I were a few years younger I would consider moving to rural France.

Pretty sure they are . On countries we have a trade agreement with it depends on the price but EU ... wno knows.

Lets us know Jon when it turns up if duty is / was payable.

I'm sure you mean €'s not £'s..doubt the postie would accept £'s

Did you not get an email from la poste advising you that the parcel was at customs and there was a duty to pay?.  I usually do get the email and if you opt to pay it on line there is a significant discount on the stated charges - usually only pay 2 or 3 euros in charges plus some made up figure for the TVA.

So would I for sure (and I'm even making steady progress with my lower-intermediate French lessons after a 40 year gap)!  But my kith and kin are here and other commitments too (RC power, slope, thermal, and FF!), so I'll roll over like a good dog and pay the duty when it is demanded.

I'll report back on the details once the pain is over.

Ernie, google,  Boulons à tête cylindrique M3. If you want best quality, state the hardness needed. Low hardness equals cheesium. From distant memory, aren’t you living near Saintes, if so, along the N137 towards Rochforte, is a BricoDepot, on the right. They do them, and I’m sure they do down to M3

Also be aware, if Customs & Excise thinks you & the sender are under valuing the Item. They have been known here in Ireland to Google the item and charge duty based on the higher value.

The tinternet isn't just useful for us. I have a friend who is a postman, he collects obscure CD's & Vinyl (he's a nice bloke really), he has had C & E check on-line for the value of an item.

Brexit, just keeps giving. 😁
