Forum members' new models: Let's see them.

Not a new model, but regulars at the Greenacres fly ins will recognise the plane. Belonged to Alan Clayton, the engine failed and got broken. Wasn't badly damaged, but Alan didn't want to repair it, as he wanted a new model, so I had the bits and repaired it.

Only the firewall/u/c was ripped out. No damage to wings or cowl, so here it is...

Maidened my Seagull Skyraider this afternoon fitted with a CRG 15cc petrol.

I was thinking of removing the 12 rockets for the first flight to reduce the weight but decided to test it "all up" instead. The 12 rockets weight a total of 224g & that doesn't include the 2 big bombs!

The real Skyraider was capable of carrying more than it's own weight in ordnance but this one was heavy, really heavy! And draggy too with fixed undercarriage and airbrakes. It was flying OK at 100% throttle but not fast at all. All that drag was holding it back and the new engine was not yet producing full power. Handed the sticks to Paul for a few circuits in which he rolled it too then took it back for the landing. (can't shy away from them all the time!

Took 3 overshoots at the landing just getting the approach and speed right with half flap selected. Even then it was still at about 50% power to keep it in the air although quite slow still. Touched down on the first 1/3rd of the strip and stopped in the last 1/3 so no real problems getting it in our short patch.

So despite liking the look of all those bombs and rockets they'll have to go! The rockets will be re-built using 16mm foam noodle instead of the heavy plastic pipe they are now and the bombs and centerline drop tank will be removed & cleaned up. Also on the drawing board are a pair of retracts. They will increase the weight back up again a little but the cleaner airframe should fly nicer!

This is my Aerolab Locamp, An Italian designed kit plane. it is 1/6th scale, 60" span and powered by an OS 48 Surpass which blends in rather nicely with the dummy engine. That dummy engine took almost as long as the model to build.

THat way lies insanity. 190 1/32 plywood discs for a start. and every rockerbox cover has the name "ROTEC" embossed on it!!!
