Summer 2023 is here, who has been flying then?

Recommended Posts

Went to my local club patch for a few flights with a mate yesterday. Red and yellow seems to be popular 😂 Flew my OS37 powered Hirobo Lama for the first time this year to iron out any issues prior to attending the Hastings club scale fly-in this Sunday. Also gave my OS55AX powered GeeBee a couple of flights, also in preparation for Sunday. All good 👍

Yesterday was a lovely calm day so I took the old Flambards Bleriot for a majestic sailing around the sky, four very good flights.

Also been helping Martin who is a returning to the fold modeler after a twelve year absence. He has built a very nice DB version of the Cub and is quickly getting the feel of the sticks again.:classic_biggrin:

Very nice, is it from a kit or plan built?

The Coverite kit was gifted to me last November by a club member. Allegedly it had been laying around since the 1980s and he was never going to build it. He also gave me Solatex to cover it. Worst kit I ever built. Die cut formers and ribs were largely crushed outlines with no printed lines to follow the correct outline. Some wing ribs were the wrong shape. Time hadn't been kind to the spruce spars, which were warped, and half the balsa for sheeting was very dry and cracked easily. The plan did not detail formers and ribs to cut accurate replacements. It really tested my skills and in the end I probably replaced half the wood. Having said all that, it is a pretty aeroplane and it flys well. Not the sort of model I would normally go for.

The plan is available on OuterZone https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=8284

Superb few hours this morning at the local club field. Thick fog at home - less than 50m visibility - drove the few miles to the field, which is a wee bit higher and emerged from the gradually thinning mist, to be met with perfect conditions at the field and it was hot in that sun. Muggy, like the West African jungle, with steam rising from the bushes and a filigree of heavily dew-laded spider webs. Soon burned off though and with the merest breath of wind had a great morning's flying, not even marred by the repaired wing on my GWS Tiger Moth folding in the air, causing a vertical plummet to earth and damage limited to the entire airframe. I'll put the model to one side for a few days, but looks quite repairable, if I make some new cabane structs.

Cracking afternoon on the slope today - sunny and warm with a 14-22mph SW wind bang onto the slope the lift was great and much fun was had. There were a few brief spells where the lift just completely died, even though the windspeed didn't drop to much, it just veered a few degrees off the slope, leading to a few interesting unplanned arrivals. No significant damage, other than to wounded pride. I was glad that I'd chucked the wee Lidl glider onto my backpack for when the wind did drop a little.  It's great to have the option when it's going to be a bit blowy for the flat field to just take a few gliders up the slope instead.

Thick fog at 7:30 am this morning. Even the Red Arrows display was cancelled for Southport airshow.

We managed to fly UMX's and 3d planes close in for the first couple of hours and gradually the fog got burnt off and left a hot sultry day.

All sorts of things flown, and lots of tea and bacon and sausage butties provided by one of the lads who brings a stove with him and the contents of his van as pictured 😁

Great days flying... Eventually😁

Today I attended the annual scale fly-in at the Hastings Model Flying Club, near Pevensey. I'd estimate well in excess of 50 models were present of all different shapes, types and sizes. Many more turned up after I took some pictures. It was great to see some different models from those I see at my clubs. There was a 90 degree cross wind from the get go until the early afternoon, followed by the doldrums for an hour or so, then followed by a brisker wind almost straight down the runway as darker clouds approached. I didn't fly my GeeBee and Hangar 9 Twin Otter because of the cross wind. Flew my Hirobo Lama a couple of times, but it seems to have developed a low frequency vibration after behaving beautifully earlier in the week. Flew my Top Quark 4 times and got a great deal of interest. Overall a great day was had by all.

Smashing morning for the third flying day in a row. making the most of the weather, which looks like it might have just broken, Really good turnout at the club and lots of interesting models flying. A rare outing for my EFlite Corsair, Parkzone UM Mosquito, Ares Sopwith Pup and a few of the more regular models.  Clubmate Steve captured some pictures of the Mosquito, with it's close escort of Volantex Spitfire, which I was delighted to see - thanks Steve.

Another scorcher here in North Suffolk, which again meant curtailing flying at about 2.30 but not before 4 trainees, newbies, returnees had several flights and went away happy. It was so busy training that I only had a 4 minute flight with the Tasman at the end of one training session!

Out again Today, here in Manchester it was a bit overcast but that did not stop me from doing more test flights with my latest design.

I cut approx 1/3 of the Tail-plane and added a mechanism to stop the prop from windmilling.

I think the plane now flies even faster and better and now I don't break the Prop on landing. 😃

I have had a good week of work so its Back to work Monday, so the weather can return to normal now 😉

Happy Days, Steve.   😁

I was out flying again at Norman's Park in Bromley yesterday with a bunch of guys who meet up most Wednesday afternoons. It's not a formal club. There are some who are self sufficient shall we say. Others are real rookies seeking assistance from Rob Newman of Avicraft. He has his work cut out. I am offering my assistance but not treading on any toes. They are an enthusiastic bunch including some young kids who make a long bus ride with their models. Unfortunately there was a direct hit mid air collision. Damage was limited to both entire airframes.
