   Loud farm Tractors [no quiet cabs back then] and machine's. Shotgun shooting, no ear defenders for me. Oh and very loud disco's.

Ear defenders were compulsory wear in noisy environments when I worked at RR (it's probably stricter now - and rightly so).  Almost totally deaf in one ear and not too good in the other but may have been caused by many, many 1000s of miles motor cycling with a 'pudding basin' (ACU-approved) helmet.

Unheard of in the RAF in the 50s and 60s

Had my first ear defenders in the 70's. Left them in the tractor. Put them on a few days later and had a strange feeling in one ear. A spider had nested in them and hundreds of spiderlings were now all over and in my ear!

You were lucky. A club member put on a pair of gardening gloves a couple of weeks ago. Agonising pain in his finger.A spider had bitten him. he had two puncture marks in his finger. Took a day for the pain to subside/

I used to work on the Dyno beds running up tractor engines , that was noisy, even with ear defenders. I went for a hearing test with the company, it was so quiet I fell asleep in the booth during the test. It was never rerun, so I dont know what they made of it!!!!..
