Forum members' new models: Let's see them.

Recommended Posts

Just finished fettling this old plan built 76" span Airco DH2, was hoping it would get airborne today but the model wouldn`t pick up enough speed on the take off run so i aborted it. Turns out the pusher prop was on back to front, only found out when one of the club members checked his pusher prop at home, in my defense i refitted it the way it had come off the model when i stripped the engine to sort out a stuck valve. To prove it here are a couple of pics to show the serrated marks on the back of the prop, there are none on the other side. I have reversed it now so will run it up tomorrow, all being well i will try for a test flight again tomorrow.

Gorgeous DH2 there Martin. 😎👍

Thanks, it is a bit of a show stopper, pictures don`t do it justice, there is so much scale detail in the cockpit, all the instruments are hand made with brass rims, the pilots seat is a scale wicker one. I will be happier once i have got the first test flight out of the way, i have added a fair bit of lead to the nose to make the balance look better, it seemed marginal at best although the model looks as though it has done a fair bit of flying in the past. Rather nose than tail heavy, i will remove it bit by bit in subsequent flights.

OK, so this was passed to me after being intercepted on its way to landfill. After failing to identify it,( it was clearly a kit, approx 41”), I had no real projects under way, so I had a bit of a head scratch and decided to see if I could make something of it, as it seemed a shame to bin and was actually a nice build.

I determined it was closest to a clipped wing spit, so embarked on rounding the top deck, with depron sanded, and then 1/32nd sheet. Filled in the cut away for IC, and made hatches for electric motor and battery access. Rummaged in the garage for various bits I already had, and treated it to some decals. After a lengthy interview process Snoopy got the gig!, and prop on for flat field, prop off for slope.. What do you all reckon, does it resemble loosely a spit of a MK XVI variety? I think I will call it a “Spitish”... perhaps cartoon scale!, with a cartoon pilot! 😊

Lovely covering. May I ask, have you put anything before you applied the metal tape? I have one that I would like to emulate the covering.

Thanks Murat. It was a new one to me. My dad had given me a box of covering and I stumbled across this stuff. On the roll it had “fibre film” written with pencil. No adhesive on the back, but very light. I used “Fast tack” PVA, only watered down like 10% I found the best. Over an open structure would be a challenge but this was actually quite relaxing to apply, leave it 2hrs, and then run over it with an iron.

This is my Mark Rittinger 'Super Sportwin.  Wings by 'Bill', the rest from stock.  3542/1000 motors, 40A Hobbywing ESCs and Banggood retracts.  I found out the hard way that when you build a twin, you effectively commit yourself to building 3 fuselages!

I maidened it a month or so ago and it flew superbly.  The second flight - not so much...  The wing survived, as did the tail feathers and all the hatches.  So when I've summoned up the willpower, I'll build 3 more ^%^*&% fuselages (and 'character' as well, apparently...)

It's like a modern version of the D.H.Comet ,pity there's no Mc'Leccy air race. Lovely plane Mike, I don't mind building fuselages it's wings I don't like making especially biplanes and triplanes

My electric flight mentor Peter Wilson built a beautiful Sportwin and incorporated a low profile undercarriage to save on hand launching, A marvellous model. Tim Hooper also championed the Sportwin round the fly-ins in the early days and they were always lovely models. I think Mike's is quite the nicest scheme that I've seen, perfectly executed.

Seeing the model here with Peter in 2001 and in the light of our recent losses as a modelling community of modelling giants like Peter Miller and Chris Golds it brings it home that we really need to cherish and appreciate those heroes, making the most of the time we have together.
