Did you planish the Ashtray ?

First thing we made in metalwork too.  I rather doubt that 12 year olds would be allowed to use a brazing hearth to bring the copper up to cherry red heat for annealing after a quick demo by the teacher in these mollycoddling and litigious days.

They did Martin, I also made the brass 3 legged ashtray, I planished it so much that it ended as floppy as wet fag paper, I did make a second one but not so much

on that one, I was probably 12/13 as my first school project was the fire stand, shovel and poker, a gods end for us living in a prefab with a 2 bar electric fire for heating.

My last job was a the tecnician in a craft, design and technical department in an upper school.

We had a lad in his final year and his final project was a "toybox" Which consisted of six sheets of chipboard and which was diabolical.

Now I was using the equipment to do a "Government" job building a small glow engine and he spotted this and suddenly found a real interest.

As I had enough spare material  started teaching him. This included turning and milling etc. He didn't have time to finish it but he had gone a long way towards that..

The head of the department was completely amazed.  I think I got more satisfaction from finding the lads inspiration to go on and hopefully find a career in something that really interested him.

Oh! And mine was finished but didn't work,  My Guru Tom Crompton explained where I had gone wrong on the piton/cylinder fits.

When I was 14 or 15 in around 1971/72 we had a forge in our metalwork room in school. We used to be taught how to bash pieces of red hot steel into pokers etc. on an anvil. I can remember being chased around the room by the school bully waving a piece of red hot metal at me. I assume kids today aren’t allowed to do that any more - either bash hot metal, or wave it around at the other kids!

Likewise in the early 70's the school I was at had a forge with a large fire and 2 anvils, a twin brazing hearth complete with quench tank and acid bath as well as lathes and milling machines with only the most rudimentary guards. I don't recall any serious accidents only minor cuts from swarf.

Those were the days.....!!
