rcaddict
So now we are in winter months I find it somewhat difficult to see my white foamie against the white skies, so Im going to paint an old wot 4 foamie, I was thinking of a yellow acrylic paint for the base colour, any one got a better suggestion
Denis Watkins
Cub Yellow always seems to stand out in most weather OG.
Peter Miller
Forget yellow. It will vanish as easily as white. You need very dark undersides I find that one of gthe best is dark undersides with big white squares as contrast. they seem to flash which makes them stand out. Allan Bennett
I used to have a model that was black with silver trim. The black stood out against any sky -- so long as you're not night-flying
Ernie
Peter is right, Most important is to be able to differentiate between the top and the bottom, so that you can be sure which way up you are, It's not necessarily the colour, but the contrast ernie
rcaddict
yes I agree about the contrast for flashes etc but you know how you can lose sight of a model in the distance against the white sky, I want to be able to pick the plane out against the sky at distance not necessary which way up it is (although thats a bonus)
Gordon Whitehead 1
The reason the RAF paints its trainer Hawks and Tucanos black these days, instead of the silver with yellow or dayglo patches and later on red/white/grey which trainers used to be, is that they found that black stands out best against all skies. john stones 1 - Moderator
Yellow models are best colours for seeing in any sky, Yellow/ Black is best of lot, Why else would most of my models be Yellow John

cymaz
I put chrome Film on the upper wing of my small Wot4. Deffinately knew which way was up. This scheme was very visible in the air.
Bob Cotsford
MY EYES! My solicitor will be in touch.... Here's one I had problems with until I added some fluorescent red trim: Edited By Bob Cotsford on 13/11/2016 10:15:
David Davis
I find that orange or red are very visible under most conditions, however...
rcaddict
thanks guys - I suppose anything must be an improvement on WHITE edit - during winter anyway Edited By oldgit on 13/11/2016 10:32:
John Privett
I put some fluorescent orange film (don't recall if it was solarfilm or profilm) in the wingtips and elevator of my white pushycat. That made quite a difference to the visibility in low-light, greyish-white skies. The film has now faded severely, it just looks pale yellow! Time to replace it I reckon! David - "La Rosse d'Hiver"? literally the winter nag (as in old horse), I guess that's equivalent to what many of us would call a Winter Hack? David Davis
Well done John! It's the nearest I could get in French to "Winter Hack." The white stripe on the Hooligan's wing showed up well in most lights. Edited By David Davis on 13/11/2016 10:58:

Robin Etherton
Another vote for red and yellow mixed. Not yellow on its own agreed. Robin

Simon Chaddock
IMHO against an allover cloud sky - black! 52" span and still visible at 2000' against cloud. At a distance flying straight and level it will be almost 'edge on' so you want as much black as possible. If you do momentarily loose sight of it the wings are the largest area so you will spot them first in a bank so black top and bottom. Once you have it back in sight you at least stand a chance of sorting its direction out.
IanN
The fluorescent pink, green and orange are all good
Daren Graham - Cambria Funfighters
LED strips are cheap as chips Ebay do them £12 odd for 5 meters. Use white or red for best visibility. They are self adhesive and will connect direct to your lipo, or if you fancy it Rapid RC does an RC switch for about £5. Cant go wrong. Martin Harris - Moderator
They were even cheaper last year when I bought some so have a look around. I've stuck them on a foam 3D profile model and when I'm not flying it in the dark (really good fun by the way) they work superbly in dull, overcast and misty weather... Although both red and white are very effective, my green ones seem to be the most visible in daylight. Neil67
Martin, new to LED strips. How do you connect to lipo.
Daren Graham - Cambria Funfighters
Posted by Neil67 on 13/11/2016 16:50:42: Martin, new to LED strips. How do you connect to lipo. Just red and black positive / negative wires. connect straight to a lipo or put a switch in the red line if you prefer. The RC switch is just as easy but you plug the switch into a spare channel on your RX. some even have multicolour options wit an infra red controller for different flashing sequences. Chris Walby
I use the balance lead on the Lipo, so 3S is about 12V so nice and bright. If you are using more that 3S just sue the 3S leads from the balance plug. Don't need a switch, just don't plug the balance lead in if you don't want the LED's + its all separate from the RX so little risk of a wiring/LED fault causing a loss of control What battery are you using for the plane?
