Bob Cotsford
Posted by Fun Flyer on 11/11/2020 10:01:22: Just remember that any application that is working well never works as well after its been improved!.. Is this 'application that is working well' anything we might know? RCGroups, RCMF or Aeromodellers perhaps? Direct import or attachment of pictures, links defaulting to new tabs, word/author search as a minimum, subscribe button, 'go to first unread post' button and 'like' tags should all come standard on most platforms. Stuart Z
Can we have the ability to search with a phrase not just a single word. Ie if you search for example, Super 60, it will search for super and find any reference to super but will ignore the all op important 60. Thereby giving you hundreds of things you don’t want. kevin b
How about a "sin bin" where the mods can put members to cool off for a period if they go OTT with their rants.

TBH whilst RCGroups is a great community the template is a bit tired now - for instance it has no social features (Likes/reactions etc), and visually it's not the cleanest. MattyB
Posted by Guvnor on 11/11/2020 10:14:32: Anyone who follows Key Publishings 'Flypast' forum will understand the dangers of this process. For those that don't know, Flypast magazine had a really popular forum for histoic aviation. They decided to change platforms, in the process of which they lost much of the previous posts, lost embedded links, lost pictures etc. It's killed that forum stone dead, the mass of information has been lost and Key must have taken a big hit in the wallet. Proceed with great caution and tes, test, test... This is exactly why I said it is often better to simply archive the old site in a read only state and start again afresh - that might initially seem offputting, but is far preferable to a migration that goes wrong and cannot be put right. Engine Doctor
MattyB is right . On a much smaller scale we had to change or club site as host was closing or something . I dont understand how these things are done but was wary . We lost all of our pics going back years . also lost all the tips build articles for a time until our web man found some somewhere and spent hours re-instating them.. due to this our club site visited by many virtually died overnight and despite attempts has never really recovered . Please beware .
martin collins 1
I was a regular user and poster on the old Flypast forum and was one of the many that left after the site `upgrade` dreadful waste of a great forum, careful how you do this, several of us have lost one well used site already! Capt Kremen
Appreciating we have many a very qualified and successful IT folk here, a plea from a mere mortal. Please run the new program / format by a few lay persons. Far too often those wonderful instruction manuals and programs that come with IT technology (insert device here), are complete gobbledygook to the ordinary end user. Ben-Erik Ness
Lots of modelling traffic and content has moved over to social media, and due to bad search engines lots of info gets lost. So please ensure that search options are good on the new platform. Please make it possible to edit posts, also after 30 minutes after publishing. Now old dead links etc cant be updated. Don't lose anything! Best of luck!

Martin Harris - Moderator
If nothing seems to be happening after you post - don't hit the "Add Posting" button again - check the activity indicator at the top of your browser and if it's showing activity just wait. If there's something running slowly anywhere between your PC and the forum platform then it can take several seconds (or more) to post. These multiple posts are simply the result of impatience... On Firefox the circular arrow turns to a cross while the post is being uploaded. Same for Edge and Chrome - other browsers/platforms may vary... Robin Colbourne
My twopennyworth: Links should open in a new tab. Editing by author to remain open indefinitely. Authors should be able to delete duplicate posts themselves. As others have said, please ensure posts and pictures on the existing site remain available indefinitely. They are an incredible valuable resource, with a lot of content by posters no longer with us, so its a memorial to them as well. An illustrated database of models & manufacturers, which could be added to by users would be really useful. It would allow users could record the British (and maybe worldwide) R/C model aircraft industry, including the smallest cottage industries. We are already in danger of losing memories of many from the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
Tim Ballinger
I concur with most of the above comments but if I could fix just one thing it would be the search engine. As many have said there is a wealth of info hidden on the site but finding it is a nightmare. Suffice to say that a drop down list of filters coupled with a global word or phrase search should be the minimum . Tim

But would you have a anonymous like / on YouTube where someone can like without anyone knowing who liked or disliked. Or would you have a liked by user. Phil Green
Please do the proper checks for mobile devices, please dont force 'mobile friendly' screens onto PC users. The 'rotated photos' thing is a camera problem, nothing to do with the forum, but you could strip exif completely (which also avoids dataprotection issues) then give the option to rotate. Many of the features requested already exist but for some reason people dont use them. Cheers Phil
PeterF
The ability to be logged in on multiple devices at one time with remember me active in all cases. It is a real pain being logged out on phone or tablet if I use my PC for longer or more detailed posts. Most other forums allow this. AND KEEP THE OLD FORUM INTACT AND SAVED so that when the new forum does not work, you can reload the old forum in its entirety until the new forum has been sorted out, because despite testing it may not be alright when rolled out. Why do I post this. Guvnor relates a good case of upgrades not going down well. I worked at ICI until it imploded and there was one division about 15 years ago that decided to implement new business management software. This group made specialist flavourings & fragrances and other ingredients for the food industry, so 100s of different recipes for lots of different customers, all bespoke. It made the changeover and never kept a working copy of the original system, the new system did not work, recipes were lost, product could not be made, the cost was measured in tens of millions, profit warnings had to be made to investors, division directors fell on their swords and the group never recovered and was sold off. David Ashby - Moderator
It has been a while so I thought I'd provide an update. Not that there's much to say at the moment. The new site is work in progress, and I've spoken to the guys along the way. They've been pleasantly surprised at the size of this site, particularly the forum of course and while in some respects, the delays have been due to Covid, life the universe etc. they're now cracking on. More from me when I have something.
